I've noticed that on some of my records, when I play it there's this white flake or shavings which accumulates at the tip of the stylus. Is this normal?

New records often have fine white dust from - I assume - the paper inner sleeves (or worse, the thick card inner sleeves) so I'd say that it normal.

You really need to be wiping that crud off with a antistatic brush before the needle hits the record.

It could be remnants of the lubricant used. If really bad a wet clean will cure it.

Best to replace cheap paper sleeves with antistatic ones.

I wet clean the lps too.

Some wet-clean fluids leave residue. For example, the fluid supplied with the Knosti Disco-Antistat is infamous for leaving residue which ends up as white crud on the stylus and record surface. There are threads on this forum and online with suggestions for home-made solutions, which work much better and don't leave a residue.

Unfortunately no. It also appears in ones I haven't. I use the Mint Lp solution.

In that case I return to my theory of a lubricating residue. This is a phenomenon I have not encountered. Where are you getting you vinyl from?

Perhaps these might help. At first I assumed it was part of the cleaning stylus process.
