Hi All

Can somebody make any sense of this please......

TV -Philips 7404, Amp as above, Sky +HD - video output set to Auto

All the video connections are via HDMI.

When I'm watching ITV via the Sky+ HD box and check the status on the TV I see 576p. I guess this means the Philips TV is doing the upscaling.

BUT...I am lead to believe that the amp upscales everything to 1080p so why am I not seeing 1080 when I check the status on the TV? Is the amp performing any upscaling?

Any comments really appreciated. I only bought the amp to get some digital source upscaling as my last amp only converted/upscaled analogue sources so I'm scratching my head a bit here. The WHF review also referred to this amp upscaling to 1080p

i dont think the sony does hdmi-hdmi upscaling , it just passes the signal through..

Thanks Andrew/Maxflinn

Andrew what does IIRC mean?

This is extract from the WHF review ....."while there's 1080p upscaling and video upconversion"

I always understood upconversion referred to switching analogue to digital and upscaling to be well, just that. Have I misunderstood?

IIRC = If I recall correctly

And yes, there is upconversion and 1080p scaling, but only from analogue video sources.

By the way, 'upconversion' doesn't specifically mean analogue to digital conversion: it usually refers to composite video -> S-video -> component video conversion, so it's perfectly possible (if the product allows it) to input a composite video signal and output it via analogue component video, for example.

Oh dear I've screwed up then.

I spent so long researching this purchase and by misinterpreting the review and the sony literature (extract from website ....

"Built-in upscaler generates a 1080p signal via HDMIT cable for superb picture quality") I haven't bought what I thought I had.

The WHF review did say ".....there's 1080p upscaling and video upconversion" so I looked at them as applying to digital/analog sources respectively. Clearly not!!!

Does the Denon 1910 or 2310 perform hdmi to hdmi upscaling?

You have to spend quite a lot more for a receiver that upscales hdmi to 1080p. However, I really don't think you would notice much difference between 1080i and 1080p on Sky.

Thanks Max - good thread

For me I guess its a question of the relative merits of the amp versus the TV performing the upscaling which is where I started the process. I have no idea without a side by side comparison whether the Denon 1910 or my TV would upscale the better. I may never know!!!

To be honest I think the TV is doing a pretty good job at upscaling and I still have the option of using the Sky + box to upscale but its an awful feeling when you realise that what you bought and what you thought you bought are two different things!

Gerardasnails its not a question of 1080i versus 1080p its more to do with where the upscaling is taking place.

Cheers

If your Sky HD box is one of the older ones with component, try that and see if the scaler in the Sony is better.

Thinking about this a bit more, whilst I take full responsibility for my purchase I think the WHF review could have been slightly clearer regarding the upscaling
