Have not had the chance to hear any yet, but Sound Hi Fi seem to be recommending this rather than the much higher priced well known brands. They seem to specialise in what IMO is good kit, not stupid priced stuff, although most is way out of my league.

Be grateful of opinion's of anyone who has tried this/or not.

Thanks

Your best bet would be to get some for home audition,a lot of dealers have dem sets. All our lugholes hear different things if that makes sense.

I asked PMC what they recommend and they said Van Damme, and that they use it in all their R&D and when they do professional installations.

It costs so little that it's worth taking a chance and buying some. I switched from using QED silver anniversary bi-wire, to a single wire run of van damme 6mm LC-OFC hifi speaker cable (i think it's around £4/m incl. VAT) and it was so much better. Now bi-amping with twin single wire runs on each side.

When I phoned up PMC i mentioned that i was contemplating splashing out potentially on something exotic and the guy had to stifle a laugh. Says it all really. Defo give it a go i reckon.

Indeed, and because we are talking electronics and not magic the rest of the hifi world will eventually realise if you use the 6mm stuff there is nothing on the market that can outperform it at any price.

Decided to just buy some of the Van Damme 6mm LC-OFC hifi speaker cable in the end as it is not expensive.

Really impressed, much better than the QED silver anniversary xt, more detail, bass, and depth to my ears. The focal 816v's now sound even better. Radio Head and Jack Johnson now sound more detailed, cracking bass on Global Underground cd's as well. Had to get banana plugs for the amp as they are particulary thick (well 6mm really).

Highly recommended, at £3.60/m it's worth a shot.

Got them on-line from clearlyav. Sorry if that is against house rules.

Nope - always good to know sources! The only way that would break the rules is if you were an employee/representative of Van Damme or ClearlyAV and didn't state it...

I'm thinking that £3.60pm for that sort of cable has to be worth a go...time to count the coppers in the whisky jar...!

I use the more modest 2.5mm stuff, the 6mm bit too intrusive for my budget setup but I still give it the thumbs up

This seems to be the first 'wire' thread (pardon the pun) which does not end in yay- or naysay. I'll see if there's a dealer having Van Damme in stock around here. Have not been too impressed by the Van Den Hull 122 as of yet.

Although the silly priced HiFi seems to be the trend on this side of the pond, they manage to charge double the price of the Cambridge Audio kit over here. It only got sillyer lately since the euro's been doing so well. Pocket fillers.

I did the same as Dan Turner ~ phoned PMC, asked them what they use and bought the 6mm clear-jacketed van Damme stuff. The PMC website also mentions van Damme as their cable of choice, with the sensible corollary that you can spend tons more if you wish, but doing so is unlikely to achieve better performance ~ different, maybe, but better probably not. If anyone knows what they're doing when it comes to choosing speaker cable, it should be these guys after all.

Over the years, like many audiophiles, I've tried all manner of fancy cables, none of which really justified their fancy price tags. For quite a few years I was pretty settled with 13 amp twin & earth mains cable (I recommend it as a reference relative to anything else you may try). But then I acquired a pair of PMC IB2's and figured I may as well get the proper cables to go with them. That was the only reason I changed, really.

Anyway, these van Damme cables are down to earth, quality, no-nonsense cables at a very modest price and do everything a good speaker cable should, not least when you're emptying down them most of what a pair of Bryston 7B-SST's can dish out.

I never held Julian Vereker in particularly high regard (given that Naim was a leading light in the 80's hi-fi mafia), but I did agree with his opinion that if you want to spend extra money on your system, then it's better to allocate it to higher quality electronics (and not just yet another Naim power supply) than to high priced lengths of wire. Naim's own multistranded copper speaker cable at just £5/m was/is pretty good and I lived happily with that for a few years. Now I use biwired van Damme speaker cable. It's at least as good as anything I've ever tried previously and cheaper (not merely less expensive) than virtually any other cable. Pay more if you like, but IMHO there's really no need.
