could someone recomend to me a good upscaling dvd player (720p / 1080i) that will play xvid / divx

Look at the Denon DVD1740 for £79.95 (rrp £160) from RicherSounds. I personally wouldn't bother with anything cheaper than that because the upscaler will be naff. What TV are you using??

[/quote] Not at all. The 1740 is excellent and wil upscale to 720p on your screen. I have for my dining room the Sony NSP78 (I think it's called). I got it for £49.99 delivered from Amazon, just before Christmas - I think prices have gone up since then to around the £70 mark. I've not tested it against my Denon but it plays very well on my Sony 20inch Bravia. It is very small too (slim and about 12 inches in depth).

You can make the 1740 region free easily (so there is a good chance it is being sold like that). The Sony seems to be a different kettle of fish - but I haven't checked for a while. There should be a hack out there somewhere. Divx and all that is fine with both.
