Helo everyone! Hope your not freezing to death in Sweden like me! Basically I have owned a pair of hd 600 for maybe 3 years now, and i recently bougt a pair of mayflower trp50 fostex. I love my hd 600 but they are a litle to neutral for some music out there, and the fostex are a litle to muffled and sharp for music, and so a mainly use them for gaming. Do you have any suggestions for what an uppgrade from the 600 could be? A headphone with fairly neutral but enjoyable sound.

By 'too neutral' are you saying you want more bass / warmth, or more treble / presence?

If you want to stick to Senn, try finding somewhere that sells the 650 or 660S. That said, you've not mentioned a price range.

I agree.. 600s & 650s are in production for so many years and still used in studio and by many music lovers out there.. I wouldnt call it ‘upgrade’.. both are superb and real world benchmark...

+1

If you like the Senn sound then maybe look at the HD700 or HD800

I don't know if there is a upgrade after the hd600......just something different?
Definitely an upgrade. I’ve never been overly keen on the Sennheisers, even the HD800, although they were a step up from the HD600/650. The Audio Technica ATH-ADX5000 are another jump again - fantastic sounding headphone, as long as they’re driven properly. If there were ever a pair of headphones that could tempt me into a headphone only hi-fi system, the ADX5000 would be it.

I always wanted to hear what the fuss was all about with he Stax 'earspeakers'; the huge rectangular ones like a set of mini Magneplanars for your head. Wasn't even sure if the company was still around, but it turns out they are, and they are celebrating 80s years this year. Looking at their website, its style and appearance is not far behind celebrating 80 years as well.

Hi David...I was assuming that the op was keeping the budget real and somewhat around the same price range as his hd600.Those audio technica cans ain't cheap.

Blimey! You ain't wrong there Mark *shok*

still cheaper than focal utopia’s @ £3500

how do they sound? like 10 times better than hd650?

I need to hear them one day

I wasn’t necessarily making a recommendation to the OP, more to yourself questioning if there is anything better than 650s. Obviously, anyone who did their homework properly in the first place are going to need to spend more to get better. They’re an odd “high end” headphone. They’re very light for one thing, which usually denotes a high use of plastic - but here’s no plastic in sight! In my view, they’re definitely in the realms of “reference” headphones.

I'd love to hear a pair of those. Yet I reckon by the time you're spending more than £400 on a pair of headphones you're already well into the realm of diminishing returns. Maybe I would consider it if for some reason I had to make them my primary transducer (say I moved into a tiny flat where speakers were either impactically loud or I had no space).

With the rrp of the HD650 being £400, that makes the AT's 5 times the price - even at the going rate of £300, the ATs are still less than 7 times the price. Imagine comparing a £400 speaker and a £2,000 speaker...

The difference is £400 headphones are already spectacular while £400 speakers are maybe two rungs up from any maker's poverty-spec model. Probably more relevant to imagine comparing a £4000 speaker to a £20000 speaker.

Funnily enough, I was going to say it's like comparing £800 speakers to £4000 speakers as a more fair comparison...

I agree that £400 headphones are good, but I personally wouldn't use the word "spectacular". Until recently, I'd have put £1300 as spectacular as I have a couple of headphones at that price point I like and would've been happy with - now that I've heard the AT's at £2,000, that is what I would say warrants such a description. When I reviewed them, I said that I doubt I could now bring myself to buy any of the excellent £1300 headphones that are out there, knowing that the ADX5000s are sitting there at £2,000.

You only have to spend a bit of time listening to the ADX5000s, and then revert to any other headphone (as I did, around the £600 mark) to find that what you thought sounded great at £600 now sounds like a pair of Beats! Eye opener.

You've nailed in one the reason why generally I do not seriously audition hifi beyond a price I can realistically afford. I'm happier in my ignorance.

tbh my serious music listening ( or when I truly listen to music) is always on a pair of hd650s and despite buying new speakers recently we merely use speakers as tv sound and background music.. it's only with headphones when I'm with the music and nothing else matters..

I think I'll be interested to check whats possible with higher end phones, ie audio technica, focals or some planars/ electrostats
