Looking to upgrade my surround sound amp currently got a Denon AVR-3805 which i got 2nd hand for about £500.

Want to spend similar money, but want something i can route my blue ray and hd dvd off of. One thing i've never liked about the Denon it seems horrendously complicated to set up and use. Quite technical spent 10 years working in IT and i even i struggle with the manual and getting it set right so have never probably got the best from it.

Everyone seems to be recommending the Denon AVR-1910, will this give an improvement over the 3805?

So looking to spend £400 - £500 on a decent amp that can perform well with sources from Sky-HD box, Blue ray player, and a PC.

I have a Denon 3805 and would not consider a 1910 an upgrade, HD audio or not!! You only need to set up an amp once, so study the manual and tweak away. Denon amps aren't that complex to setup but their manuals are written by idiots for experts and not the other way around. To this end, if you do go for another Denon (2310 would be the minimum IMO), I would check out batpig's guide, which you will find if you google it. The Marantz SR6003 is about the cheapest new amp, I would consider looking at from my trusty Denon. Don't rule out Yamaha either, their newest receivers haven't quite hit the mark if you read the reviews but their older models (863/1900) are still worth a look.

I've just upgraded my 2nd system from 3805 to Onkyo 876, i'm pleased with the considerable upgrades to all forms of audio and the extra facilities the Onkyo offers, the set up was simple, helped by a very well written manual.

I agree that to get a worthwhile upgrade to the 3805 you'll need to spend more than £400-£500 if buying new, i suggest you look out for models from Yamaha, Denon, Pioneer and Onkyo that are due to be replaced, hopefully bringing these amps in this sub £1000 bracket closer to your budget, also ex demo, second hand and factory refurbs may fit the bill, Creative Audio recently sold a used Yamaha 3800 for £599, including free delivery and 12 months warranty, also remember if you're moving your Denon on you can expect to get between £200-£250 for a well looked after model on Fleabay.

I paid £629 for a new Onkyo 876 with Free delivery and the full 3 year Onkyo genserve warranty from Audio T.
