St. Anger. An absolutely horrific work of art.

I think Metallica have released some of the worst music of the last ten years.

Agree 100% about St Anger.

Even worse is Pat Metheny's Zero Tolerance for Silence. Nothing but buzzing and screeching.

Busy listening to this album loud - and yes i can hear the dynamic compression etc BUT........

Ive got goose bumps and ive been singing along and really enjoying it haaahah and yes parts did hurt my ears

so no to me it is not unlistenable at all - thinks its down to the fact that there is just really guitar, bass and voices with the drums and not a lot crammed in - unlike to me the cold play i moaned about before - that really bugs me

I bought this many years ago from HMV without listening to it first ( the days before spotify ) because I like Pat Metheny and expected it to be similar , how wrong I was it sounded like several wild cats trapped in a scrap yard !

I thought my system was broken *shok* ! I did some checking and found out it was supposed to sound like that .

I would rather tolerate silence every time *stop* so I took it back for a refund !

It's a great album and I've listened to the original CD version many hundreds of times but given the choice I'd listen to the pre-mastered version every time. The extra dynamic range makes it sound even more dynamic, energetic and full of life and there's none of the clipping distortion noises to spoil the music. When you compare them back to back the improvement is easy to hear.

Looks like I might have had a duff k3 amp. It has been replaced due to standby not working correctly, and I reckon the new one sounds better. Just put on back in black, and it rocks! Thank God for that! It could be that I haven't heard any music for a week, but I'm pretty sure this amp sounds better. Not as bright...I think the last one had an issue recognising its midrange and treble. Well now I'm happy...the music's back...back in black!

Steve, I wonder if the treble thing is also age related - I too used to have an intolerance of excessive treble, but now that I'm (just) the right side of 50 I'm pretty sure my hearing FR is tailing off at the top end. I know in my late teens / early 20s i could pretty accurately detect a 20Khz signal from the various hearing tests I did at the time, whereas now I'm pretty sure I can't. I haven't done a clinical hearing test in nearly 10 years so can't be sure, but it's what I'd expect. It's different from being slightly deaf - I'm sure I have the most sensitive hearing in my household, and most hi fi shop salespeople; it was always pretty good in those hearing tests I undertook all those years ago.

It could well be an age thing. I'm still a youngser (by hifi forum standards ;) ) and can hear upto 17kHz on a good day, 16kHz on a bad day and it does varies slightly from day to day.

I've never had a proper hearing test but I think I have pretty good hearing. Apart from a few raves when I was a teen I've always tried to stay away from loud sounds. I'm paranoid of playing earphones too loud as I want to be able to keep enjoying music for many more years to come.

Very sad when the pirate copy is much better quality than the original

Indeed it is.

There must be thousands of modern dynamically compressed albums which have much better quality pre-mastered versions hidden away in the depths of the record companies but will never see the light of day.

I'm just glad someone managed to sneak a good quality pre-mastered copy of Californication out from under the record companies noses. It makes me wonder if it may have even been the work of one of the RHCP band members themselves who did it when they heard what a mess the record company had made of their album. All that hard work they put into creating great music only to have it messed up by the mastering engineer must really be annoying for the band members.

Not sure but apparently the artists often demand it to be as loud as possible so maybe its not always the mastering and record companies fault?
