Tv calibration

Hi All,

i keep reading or seeing about calibration of your Tv, how is this done and can you do it yourself or does it need an expert who will charge the earth.

Do a google search, you will find sites that give excellent settings for individual models.

Its done using (expensive) equipment, approved by manufacturers and broadcasters using industry agreed settings. It costs around £300 perhaps a bit less if you shop around. The benefits, apart from very accurate settings, are that often they have access to hidden menu options, like locking settings and more accurate adjustment options, which you can't access yourself. The downside is that if you move and/or use your set in a different room the calibration is sometimes not accurate anymore as ambient light is taken into account when setting brightness/contrast etc..

There are diy options such as spider 3 or eye one which include calibration software and a light/colour meter. You use with a pc/laptop. I understand that they are very accurate too but obviously lack certain features and won't allow you to access the afromentioned and sometimes hidden expert settings on your set. The upshot is you can calibrate in different places at no extra cost.

Or you can run through the THX calibration (available on any pixar DVD for example), which is a good compromise.

Depending on the TV, the hdvtest.co.uk website often tells you in their tests how they calibrated it.

They also sometimes tell you how to get into the service menu, but you do this at your own risk!
