TV as monitor not working.

I have (very simply) plugged my TV into my pc, via the extra monitor output on the back of my PC. Very simply, the TV doesnt get any signal. I've looked at the PC programs, but there isn't an obvious 'make your TV into an extra monitor' tab. What have I forgotten/omitted?

Assuming you're using Windows Vista, make sure you have done the following:

Right click on the desktop
Select "Personalise"
Select "Display Settings"

Now you should get the Display Settings box. In the middle there should be two quadrilateral shapes, labelled 1 and 2.
Select 2, and make sure you have the "Extend the desktop onto this monitor" box ticket, but leave the "This is my main monitor" box un ticked.

With 2 still selected, select the correct resolution for the display and Apply.

That's all I had to do anyway.

Thank you Al, I found a similar route to that which you describe. Control Panel - NVidia control - Multi display - and untick the 'main monitor' box. Now the TV shows all that any monitor sees with the added bonus that the screen no longer goes into auto shutdown when you don't use the mouse. Great! All my films, indeed all my computer is now 42".....bliss.
