Turntable idea out, new amps in

I've just come to terms that a TT is a silly idea for someone who has no vinyl.

So I'm looking to update my amps perhaps. They need to fit into a slot 100x440mm, and have two sets of speaker terminals on each amp - pre/integrated and power.

They will be partnered with Arcam, Dali and ProAc - Arcam A38/P38 combo is the frontrunner currently unless anyone can persuade me otherwise.

What do you reckon?

I've not heard the A38/P38 but on its own the A38 got 3 stars in its review. I know how much you love Arcam and I have soft for them two but I think you can do alot better for the money unless there is a special deal that you've found that you've not told us about.

Also you're proposing £2000 worth of amplification into £900 speakers. Personally I would spend slightly more on the speakers than the amps.

I'm not sure how much your budget extends to but have you considered something like the Leema Pulse? Not sure how well these will work with your existing components as I believe they need carefully system matching.

i run a mf A5CR pre amp with two arcam p35 power amps - bought whole lot for under £1500 orig retail was more than double that - all discontinued products - the sound is amazing - the arcam really warm and deep - very smooth sound - suits my musical tastes perfectly

The A38 has received rave reviews elsewhere, and I think the Dalis are perfectly capable of dealing with superb amplification.

Simaudio... you need to get mooned my friend. Nothing like a big chunk of weighty canadian steel. Oh and they sound like you spent twice as much.

I was going to suggest the CA 840E and 840W pre and power combo but they are too big. We all know you will go Arcam though Joel!

Joel - I heard the A38 and P38 this weekend just gone as well as the A18 and A28 married with the P35 and they all sounded superb.

IMO the A28 with the P35 sounded just as good; if not that little bit better than the A38/P38 combo!

It just had that nice warm Arcam sound to it but with bags of power and punch, smooth midrange and the treble was spot on.

I demo'd them through the M/A GS10s and the M/A GS20's as well as some B&W 683's.

I do think you'd be best going for the Arcam upgrade but deffo demmo the A28 vs the A38 as well as the assorted power amps!

I won't neccessarily go with Arcam but the amps must have two sets of speaker outputs.

I would like a P35 but am having difficulty locating one given it's discontinued.

Where did you demo these Dan?

I've seen these and am monitoring them closely, although really need silver finish for aesthetic reasons.

I don't think they would be an improvement on what I already have.

i could only get black P35s as well, one of the reasons apart from the way it sounds that i opted for the MF A5CR pre amp as it has thick black edging on both side and ties them all in together really well for asthetics. It also has a wonderfully phono stage

What are you're thoughts on the cd-1, i-1 and i-3? I'm looking forward to hearing them on Saturday.

I think Moon is one of the companies out there to beat... I can't afford anything of their stuff but I think you'll be impressed. Build quality is second to none.
