Hi, so this probably seems like a silly question here, but if I get a turntable such as Pro-Ject Elemental or Rega RP1, can I plug that straight into a hi-fi amp like Cyrus XP or does it need to pass through a separate amp for vinyl?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

It depends. If you are using an integrated amp (you mention Cyrus XP but not what exactly, the XP is a range of ptroducts) that has an inbuilt phono preamp then you can attach turntable direct to the amp (input usually marked 'phono'). This will work if your cartridge is either a Moving Magnet or hi-output Moving Coil design (most cheap turntables come fitted with a Moving Magnet cartridge of some description).

However, most modern amplifiers are tending towards digital inputs and do not have inbuilt phono stages. To use one of these amps you would need to buy a seperate phono preamp and plug turntable into this first before taking interconnects from it to one of the 'line in' pair of sockets on the amplifier itself.

Hope this helps.

PS. There are no silly questions here, just silly answers. :)

Thanks for the reply

its a Cyrus 8 XPD

... I don't think it has a photo input...

You are correct, it doesn't and it doesn't have a phono one either :) . This is a DAC equiped integrated so you would need a phono pre-amp in order to connect a turntable to it.

If you are looking at getting one I can thoroughly recommend the Schiit Audio Mani.

Thanks for the clarification!

Ill check out that amp you recommended.

I've also made a new post to see if anyone here uses vinyl with the same amp or speakers I have.

Cheers!
