TURNTABLE ADVICE NEEDED

Hi guys, a bit of turntable advice needed. Due to moving my system into the lounge and having it more on show, the boss and I have decided that my beloved technics sl1200 is a bit too ugly ( and the wrong colour) so I may have to sell it and get something more asthetically pleasing. My price range will be in the £300 mark so the obvious choice so far would be the pro-ject carbon, though saying that something from rega appeals also. Would any of these decks sound much better than the Technics ?Any other advice on which models are best would be great, thanks guys.

You're pretty spoiled when it comes budget TTs. Rega, Pro-ject, Goldring are worth considering. That said, I don't know how they'll compare to your Technics. Pretty good sounding from all the things I read about the SL 1200.

BTW, still waiting for some pics of your system. ;)

Why don't you give the guys at Inspired HiFi a call?

They are doing a mod for the SL1200/10 - basically a new case to make it look better!

As I've mentioned before about the Naim CDP and Leema. Still not totally convinced by the look of the two together but they sound sublime. IMO, that outweighs the aesthetics.

Have you got room for a second system somewhere for the technics, a nice manlab escape

Then just buy a rega rp3 or project debut for the living room

Keep it then. Buy the domestic godess a bunch of flowers , sleep in the shed for a couple of nights , grow a spine ,and keep it.

Flog it and regret. Plus it will be all downhill from there ;).

I had a silver SL1200 MK2 many years ago when I was into dance music in a big way, it was bombproof, just had the standard Stanton 500AL cart on, using it with a Marantz Pm66KiSig amp - sounded excellent - but cant really compare how it sounds to a Rega deck. My music taste has changed somewhat so dont how Roxy Music would sound on it! I never saw it as an audiophile TT but looking back it still cuts it today. I always thought as it was direct drive and the PSU was under the platter then SQ was compromised - i could be wrong though, Brother Browne - Under the Water sounded mint on it though!

Yeah I remember you saying on another thread. Luckily I dont and never will feel yer pain mate.

The Droidette has never come into the equation in what I buy hifi wise or anything else for that matter. Although in fairness she has never mumped about the looks of any of my gear . Tough poo poo if she did mind ,lol.

I remember also why you had to sell yours mate ,needs must and all that stuff.

Yep along with a CD63KiSig, PM66KiSig and some Mission Speakers (when they were good, cant remember the model) - That system seriously kicked ass - wonder how it would fare today against my set up.

Perhaps add one of the Ortofons to your list. For under a hundred pounds it would have to be the 2m red.

I love my Ortofon which has a nude bonded elliptical so is more akin to the blue but even with an aftermarket (non-nude) elliptical it is clearer than the Shure M97xe (or M75ED). There is just something very refined about it.

The Shure is nice too so a good suggestion by andybeau imho. Just depends what kind of presentation you prefer.

regards
