Hi folks, any recomendations for a TT shelf? Something that doesnt need an engineering degree to fit. Dont have a local hi-fi shop to ask in. Ta.

When I had a wall shelf for my old Systemdek TT, I had one of these Custom Design shelves..

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Custom-Design-Wall-Mounted-Turntable-Support-Black-Frame-Clear-Glass-Shelf-/230964091440?pt=Turntable_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35c6885a30

Looked really nice and only required 4 wall screws. I didn't buy it new, but went on other hi-fi forums' classified sections, and asked if anyone had a shelf to sell and consequently picked up a really nice condition one for £50. An option worth considering perhaps.

Wouldn't you use a spirit level to install and therefore would not need a levelling system?

Hi, bluenose, have you seen the HiFi Racks Podium wall shelf? I've just bought one, but haven't got round to fixing it up yet, so can't comment on it's effectiveness. They do look nice, too.

To drill holes in a wall to the acuracy that is required for TT mounting would be near imposible? There is thats; 'good enough' (for shelves) and 'perfect' (for TT's), you might be lucky . . . ???????? I'd challange any one to get a TT shelf 'spot on' without some sort of adustment being required, thats into a brick wall, wood and plaster walls would be slightly easier . . . but even then, to the accuracy offered and required by a central bubble level . . . nah!!!!

I'm afraid, 'that'al do' type leveling for TT is just not acceptable for best performance.

Be careful CJ you type far too much common sense for on here ;). Anyways you forgot the handfull of washers / *** packet required for levelling in the vertical. But what do we know eh.

Not all TTs have adjustable feet for levelling before anyone dives in :p.

Does it have to be the wall?

If you have sound, non-reverberant, floors then an old Sound Organistion or Target Audio turntable stand will do well (so long as it still has the spikes). They come up on ebay fairly regularly.

They can be levelled by adjusting the spikes.

Pro-ject made the "WallMount It 2" but I think it's been discontinued. That could be perfectly levelled by adjusting spikes under the platform.

Hi Floyd,

I found that the shelf (the one I did last year) needed re leveling a few times over a month or so as it settled, small amounts but it did settle. Then there was the fact that on my system, 3 point support, sounded better than standard 4 points, and then on top of all that, the integrity of the spike locking nuts, (one was a tad loose), had an effect on sound quality as well.

Yes, thinking about it, few quality TT have adjustable feet, Rega have no adjustment on feet or their suport . . . Doh!

. . . as you say, what do we know ;) CJSF

You have clearly never put up a TT shelf or been exceedingly lucky. For anyone with breezeblock or particularly cinderblock walls you don't have any chance of getting a TT shelf up to the accuracy needed for proper use, without the shelf having independant levelling.

with regards to leveling, it's not just a matter of getting the holes straight. I've never had a wall in any house I've lived in where the plaster was so absolutely even that a shelf doesn't lean at least slightly up or down. Without some way of levelling that forward/aft tilt, you're screwed, no matter how straight your L/R horizontal is.

How about 'for the man who has everything'. Mount the TT shelf on a floating gimble, screw the gimble mount to the wall, connect the gimble to a gyroscope . . . perfection, cost an arm and a leg, someone could offer damping for the set up, no spirit level required!!! A money spinner or what . . . ? :bounce:

This is what we need, innovation and lateral thinking.

Well CJ you do have a history of this kind of engineering stuff, particularly your work with speaker stands. So off you go then. See you on Dragon's Den?

. . . ? :? Well now MF, if I did do it, I would be laughed out of court . . . then everyone would go and copy what I hade done . . . Look at speaker stand design, before the original 'Foundation Classic, Pi and Designers', most stands looked like 'electric cable pylons' without the arms. After 1985, when Classic took the inovation award, suddenly everything changed . . .

Nah, I'll let someone else do the donkey work, I'm retired and intend to stay that way! Quetly working in my shed, inovation for my own satisfaction, now where did I put that soldering iron??? 8)

well that seems to have took on a life of its own. Thought the Podium was a bit pricey so I've opted for the apollo. All the hifi gear is currently on a dedicated rack but its in the corner next to the radiator. So I'm planning on putting it all on the tv rack & doing away with the cd as I've got the blu-ray. Oh, and I've ordered a nice new comfy chair to help the enjoyment along. I do like the look of the Podium racks so maybe thats something for next year. thanks for the comments.
