Hi Can anyone give me some advice on damping my large IPL s4 ribbon transmission line speakers ? they sound fantastic 16 inch from the back wall 5 foot from side walls, speakers 9 foot apart.... my problem is that both speakers have to go back up to the rear wall to stop me from constantly getting grief from my lovely wife.! when up against the wall (2 inch away) they still sound great but with a bass bloom thats just too slow.... am I wasting my time or can i damp the line to get rid of this and if so, which part of the line, the exit, or the mouth of the line behind the driver. They are damped to work very well at the moment 16 ins away from the wall ... profiled foam lined on two sides of the line with 5 grams of long haired wool behind the driver. Thay are BIG and very heavy so not easy to move. any help....thanks. Steve

1) Use tone controls, EQ or DSP to lower the bass.

2) Order a low-shelf filter addon for your crossovers from IPL. It will be a simple small board you attach between the amp and your speakers. It can even have a switch with few steps, -1.5dB, -3dB, -4.5dB, -6dB. If you move the speakers and it's no longer needed, you just wire amp to speakers directly.

Hi Sounds like they are possibly too big for the room? Ivan is very particular about this! First line of defence is to add a further 5 grames of long haired wool into the fisrt TL line, will tame the bass its accesable from the X over panel. Better still give Ivan a shout at IPL he will be able to help. If you need long haired wool contact me at colin@iqspeakers.co.uk I will send you some FOC.

sometimes with mine, just turning the bass down cures it. If you don't have tone controls then the solution is as Colin says. Mine are pretty close to the back wall but side clearance is good. BTW I have read about these speakers being built with damping down both sides of the cabinet but in the IPL build sheet it uses it only down one side which is how mine are. Whether and/or how this affects the bass section I don't know but in theory it must - maybe Colin could enlighten us on that one. Ivan, as Colin says, is very fussy about room size and my setup was borderline undersize, but I bit the bullet and have no regrets but the Vincent has those lovely tone controls :)
