I've got all my CDs ripped to my desktop's hard drive. I want to transfer some of them to my EeePc netbook. Not sure how to do it. I've thought using an Ethernet cable to connect the two? Tried it but no joy. Can someone shed some light.

Desktop is on Vista, EeePC is XP.

And as an update - I was able to use Network and sharing centre on desktop to set up a peer to peer network between the two computers. I could bring up the desktop and netbook but if I clicked on netbook it asked for username and password which I have no idea what they are or if I ever set that up. If I launched itunes on the netbook I could play all the files through the shared library but still no wiser as to how to move them.

a usb stick is probably the easiest way

alternatively share the directory where your music files are and all subdirectories below it on the desktop and give read permissions

map a drive on the netbook to the desktop and the shared directory then copy

you could also use a crossover ethernet cable to connect the two pcs

I only have a 256MB stick for the odd file for work.

Just to clarify this for me. Is a crossover ethernet cable different to an ordinary ethernet cable? I used an ethernet cable that came with something and thought I could just plug it in and one computer would see the other.

I did right click on the file where all my music is stored for iTunes and selected share. It then said to wait, this may take a couple of minutes after which it said the folder was shared. Would I have to do this for every folder within the music folder or will doing it the top be enough to share everything contained within it?

How do I map the drive on my netbook?

open my network places on the netbook then microsoft windows network then the name of the peer to peer network

you should see the share you created on the desktop there in which case you can click on it and youll see the files
