Hi, I use a Technics SL1210 turntable, and have just installed a Ortofon 2m Red. I have made sure the overhang is correct and its fine. I then went about balancing the tone arm so I could then adjust the weight.

I balanced my old cartrdige and stylus absolutely fine, but the new one is casuing me issues. In order to get the arm to "float" i have to move the counter weight pretty much all the way to the front. When I then set weight to "0", it only allows me to add around 1.5g to it, the reccomended is 1.8 but I cannot actually turn it anymore because it is at the very and is basically at the heaviest tracking weight possible.

Could it be the counter weight is wrong light and I need to buy a different one? Apologies in advance for a probably vauge description, but i can supply pictures if needed.

Any help is appreciated, thanks

It could be that your tracking weight needs to be swapped for a lighter one if your new cart is lighter. An easy way to get the tracking weight in the short term is to add a blob of blu tac to the top of the headshell, then rebalance the arm so it floats and then dial in 1.8. It's not pretty but it's technically sound.

don't think that's right, adding more weight will not help balance the arm, I had a 1210 and used a 2m blue with no problems. To the op try and back off on the overhang and rebalance the arm , moving the cartridge back a bit until you get the right balance and or are you using a weight under the headshell, most times it really is something overlooked that causes the problem, something silly really and then you get that eureka moment and then it all falls into place, don't forget to look on vinyl engine, great site for all things vinyl, just one other thing which is sometimes overlooked, when we allign in the headshell many people believe it to be the cartridge, not so, its the cantilever, the grid lines printed on the protractor are to get you in the ball park, its the crosshair target line's that get you dialed in, you most likely know that but it's surprising how many people don't, with that in mind try and realign and let us know how you get on.

Personally I would forget trying to dial-in an accurate weight and go and buy a cheap set of scales to get this right.

As a matter of interest what was your old cartridge?

In his other thread he states a Stanton cart.

This all seems rather strange to me as the arm on my Pioneer is similar to the Techie and I've had no problems with the Ortofon's.

Someone is advertising a "genuine unused SME headshell" compatible with all turntable tonearms for the princely sum of 65£. - a bargain - not!?

Yes, just seen that and commented. Very odd as both cartridges are similar in weight. I see his Stanton had an extra headshell weight but the arm should take the Ortofon with no problem.
