Hi,

I have the above ( quite old not upgraded yet ) tv which is a 720p HD set.

Its fed by a Sony DA5400es av amp with Sky HD going through it.

My question is all about upscaling, can someone put my mind at ease please.

Do I set my av amp to 720p or just keep it on auto ? And same question with the Sky HD box - 720p or auto ?

Both are presently on auto but not sure if thats the best option due to the fact that the tv is only a 720p set ?

When I change the Sky channels the screen goes blue before the channel kicks in - this I am presuming is because the av amp is thinking about the scaling ? If I set it all to 720p would it just automatically kick in straight to the channel ?

I appreciate my tv is the weak link of my system but cant quite afford a new set yet.

I wouldn't know for sure but i don't think it makes a difference using auto . Though i would set everything to 720p as you may find things upscaling then downscaling which in my guess would down grade the signal ( nothing that you would probably notice though)

For SkyHD I dont think it matters.

The TV can accept both 720p and 1080i input signals, although it wont accept 1080p.

I guess in your case I'd have the skyHD as 720p and the amp as auto (or direct if auto makes the amp upscale from 720p to 1080i).

U'd have to see what type of input the tv thinks its getting in the above case.

Whichever way u do it u want the signal to be 720p when it goes into your tv. I'd suspect ur tv wont have a very good (de)scaler.

Hi psurquhart. I have (nearly) the same TV; mine's a 32WL66 (no digital tuner). I had my Sky HD set to 1080i until recently when, on the advice of someone on the WHFSV forum, I changed it to Auto. I haven't made my mind up yet if it looks better, worse, or no different, but my set spends about a second 'thinking' when switching too - it didn't do this before. I don't have it routed through an amp, so it must be down to the TV. Sky HD looks so much better even on SD broadcasts that I haven't spent very much time thinking about what is the best setting, perhaps I should!

Cheers for the extra input all.

Probably splitting hairs to be honest - I'm no expert but the picture looks good whatever I do in my opinion

Another bought product ( tosh tv ) on the basis of a What Hi Fi group test way back. Really pleased with the old boy - would be interesting to know how good the newer Sonys are compared to this old tv ?

Anyway, as I said thanks for the replys. Still would be interested if theirs any professionals out there with a definitive answer to cure my curiosity ? Will set both amp and tv to 720p for now.
