My trusted Panasonic crt is showing signs of dying (has a red line when fist turned on and a red background when no picture is displayed) it does'nt owe me anything and has given me a beautiful picture for many, many years, but what to get next? I am not interested in 3D and sound from the tv is unimportant as I put the sound though my hi fi. What I am stuck on is the terms HD ready and full HD. I have my eye on a Panasonic 37" plasma its a good price and is HD ready please can someone explain what I will get from a HD ready tv compared to full HD. Thank you.

Hi, I have a 37 inch panasonic plasma the x10 model. The difference is the maximum screen resolution: HD ready TVs display up to 720p (720 lines on the screen or something like that) while full HD can display 1080p.

Whether you need full HD really depends on what you'll be watching. If you are just watching normal broadcasts or sky HD you do not strictly need full HD as sky HD only broadcasts in 720p resolution I believe. If you want to watch blu rays they can be seen at the higher 1080p resolution. Blu rays still look great on my tv but they would look even sharper and better if it was full HD.

The other thing to consider is that panasonic's HD ready TVs are the 'bottom of the range' so more expensive, full HD tvs, may have better picture quality for all broadcast types. Personally I find the picture quality of my TV excellent for the price and much better than simlarly priced LCD screens. Hope that is some help!
