Hello everyone, I have just joined and am hoping to get some help choosing our main music system.

I have been looking at the Bose Wave systems, have heard good and bad but I am put off by the high cost for what looks very little!

I like the idea of a multi CD changer and being able to play mp3 cds etc.

DAB is not that important as I already have a Pure DAB that sounds very nice for its size. This also has a optical output.

Our front room is very long and not that deep.

We like all kinds of music and I would like to get something that will last and might just open up a new world of quality sound but from a system that is a lot smaller than the big old Aiwa.

I have been told I should look at 'Richer Sounds' but they seem to be out of stock most of the time.

One suggestion I have is a pair of Tannoy F1 CUSTOM speakers (again out of stock) and a Denon DM35DAB (yes out of stock)

So with all this in mind what can the more experienced suggest.

Kind regards

Mike

It depends on your budgetÿreally, you could try the Denon DM37DAB with a few different speakers depending on your price range. I listened to it with some Mordaunt Short 902i's the other week and thought it sounded excellent for the money.

HI, thanks for the relpy (s)

Who should I buy from on-line if possible.

Please keep the suggestions comming, oh and should I forget the Bose Wave things?

Mike

Bose = overpriced IMO, and not as good as the Denon or Onkyo systems.

I would recommend Superfi as an online retailer, or Audio T. Both sites are backed up by proper bricks and mortar dealers of considerable standing (Audio T are now the same company as Audio Excellence and Practical Hi-Fi).

the bose wave I would discount completely, if I were you, as I found it rubbish. you can do much better for the money they have the cheek to ask for it.ÿ

Hi

Great to see ideas like these!

OK, will forget Bose.

Right my budget is £500 max.

So what's the best I can do for that.

I do like the idea of being able to plug a mem stick in! that would be very handy indeed.

I'll check out those other sites.

Both excellent offers. I think you'd be happy with either, although with both I'd be asking them about upgrading the speakers. Move up to BR2 for the Audio T offer and Q Acoustics 1020i for the Superfi offer and you're winning IMO. You'll get a much more full and mature sounds from the larger speakers.

I'd recommend having a listen if at all possible.

I am going to look at getting

DENON DM37DAB MICRO SYSTEM

Q Acoustics 1020i speakers

2x 6 meters cable +plugs etc

Is the 68 - 20,000 hz going to be ok? I thought we can hear down to 20hz?

Also, they say to have a special cable QED QUDOS ORIGINAL SPEAKER CABLE

Am I right that you must have the same length on each speaker?

OMG this is so, bewildering LOL

Can't decide between the two systems!

They seem much the same apart from the DM37 has 30watts per channel and the CR525 has 20.

A few moans about no CD text and hard to use remote on the DM37, but very few reviews on the CR525.

I am almost sold on the speakers now, the WHARFEDALEs look good to me.

Plus points for me on the two systems.

USB for mem sticks, can see that being very nice!

But, are there others systems that would be better with the same or more functions for a modest price increase?

OMG, this is well hard LOL thanks god there is this forum

DM37DAB

ONKYO CR525DAB MICRO SYSTEM

WHARFEDALE DIAMOND 9.1 ANNIVERSARY SPEAKERS

Q Acoustics 1020i speakers

I went for the Onkyo CR725DAB to replace my old Aiwa mini system, and think it sounds excellent as well as feeling solidly built.

It's a bit pricier at £300 but is 50W per channel, although it doesn't have the USB connection of the 525.

The Diamonds are lovely speakers but it really depends on your musical taste. They can sound a little bit distant with the wrong music- something which the Qs can't be accused of. If you are looking at that sort of price range you should also consider the Mordaunt-Short MS902is which I think are better all-rounders than the Wharfedales.

In terms of the speaker cables - yes, both sides MUST be equal length.

Also, you really need to make sure you get a decent pair of speaker stands. Something like Atacama Nexus 6 or Soundstyle Z2 would do the trick. You'd be better going for Onkyo CS525 with Q 1020is, Chord Carnival Silverscreen speaker cable, and one of those two stands than buying more expensive kit and not being able to budget for decent cables and supports.

OK, so its not a case of specs then when it comes to speakers?

The Wharfedales say they go from 50 - 24,000 while the MS902is say 55 - 22,000!

Our musical tastes go from classical to rock! lol so we need something to cover all bases there LOL

Stands might be an issue as the idea was to place the speakers on a shelf. But I will look at them.

Wire!!! I'll have a look see, I need 5 meters each side.

Are you saying I should go for the Onkyo over the Denon? if so why is that I had kind of come down on the Denon side.

Hmm, maybe I should just put up with the Aiwa for a while longer, this is all so confusing.

Or I should just be a uninformed plebe and take whats offered LOL

I had a 725DAB and it is an excellent system. I have since upgraded to separates but at a much higher cost. Enjoy!

Yeah, I wanted to upgrade to separates but sadly haven't got the room at the moment. The Onkyo felt like the best compromise as its 4 line inputs and optical input give me the option to add to it in future if I get the chance.ÿ

I didn't try the 525, but the salesman said it was a definite improvement over the Denon in his opinion.ÿ

I have a friend whose father has a mini aiwa hi-fi system from the early eighties, peired with some tannoy speakers from that decade als😵ne of the best sounds I've heard. I doubt today anyone can find something in that style that sounds so good.Keep your Aiwa anyway.I'm sure its an excelent stereo.

I probably would go for the Onkyo over the Denon, but they are both cracking value for money and I'd recommend going for a listen if you can to make your final decision. If you are mounting on shelves try to go for speakers with front ports rather than rear ones. Rear ported speakers will boom on a shelf, so in this instance avoid the Mordaunt-Shorts. The Qs and Wharfedales are both front ported so will be fine, although you'll still get better performance with them mounted on stands.

BTW I used to have an Onkyo CS515 (the previous version) and I loved it. I've also had an older version of the Denon (DM30) and enjoyed that as well, though the newer ones are much better.

Ok this is what I am going for unless anyone screams I have it all wrong LOL

WHARFEDALE DIAMOND 9.1 SPEAKERS (PAIR)
DENON DM37DAB MICRO SYSTEM
QED QUDOS SILVER ANNIVERSARY SPEAKER CABLE
MILTY CC120 4 x 4MM BANANA PLUGS

matthewpiano you still have those 8.3 wharfedale's. are you still happy with them?

Also think the onkyo sounds better.Give it a hear at least if possible.
