Thoughts on this. Optical cable without the cable

My son showed me this video yesterday and I would love to know your thoughts. To me it just seems pointless. To cut a long story short. This guy has made a surround sound set up using lasers mirrors and optical receivers plugged into the surround speakers. Effectively optical cable without the cable.

Makes me think of the Kodak employee who invented the digital camera that Kodak ignored (in favour of film) to their peril.

The above seems strange now ... but perhaps it is just too far in front of the curve that will catch up.

For me - I like cables.

I can see the appeal in a new build with concrete floors etc, for me living in an early 1900's terrace with suspended wooden floors with 3ft high crawl space under the floors, it doesn't matter as all my speaker cable is under the floor. Probably as much work involved as this guy 3D printing mirror mounts etc and lining everything up.
