This time it’s really happening. Maybe: Spotify Pro

Over the past couple of years I took advantage of free trials of the major streaming services. I was put off Spotify because while using their free system, the advertisements (yes, I know those disappear when one pays a sub) suggested Spotify was aiming at a demographic I wouldn't associate with!
Amazon Music was an awful experience: it simply wouldn't work properly on my iPhone, and their customer tech help was abysmally poor - the advisors hadn't a clue and admitted they worked only part time.
I went for Qobuz because the trial was very pleasing, and they specialise in high-res files, with decent prices on downloads. Their catalogue is huge (listening as I write to Nina Simone) and being French in origin, they list vast quantities of current French popular music - much of which I find very interesting.
Recommended.

How to enable Lossless on Spotify Premium

  • Tap your profile icon in the top left corner and go to settings and privacymedia quality
  • You’ll see the option to enable Lossless streaming quality for Wi-Fi, cellular, and downloads
    • You’ll be able to see how much data each of these requires to make choosing easier.
    • While Lossless is available across desktop, mobile, and tablet devices, as well as on many devices using Spotify Connect, you’ll need to manually select Lossless for each device.
  • You’ll know Lossless is on because the Lossless indicator will appear in the Now Playing view or bar and via the Connect Picker.

that may be lossless but can / is 24/44.1 be considered "hi-res" a-la Tidal / Qobuz ?
Well it's slightly higher than CD quality......
🙂
However, you are correct, not what I would consider to be hi res.
Again, if you're a pre existing Spotify user then this, along with access to their huge catalogue is perhaps enough to keep many using Spotify.
