I love my current high setup but I'm looking to buy an AV receiver and a 5.1 system..... The question is as there are 4 plugs in the back of my Hifi speakers can I plug 2 into my Hifi amp and 2 into an av receiver?

Also rather than buying new speakers can I use a set of MA BR1 I have lying around as the rear speakers?

Thanks in advance

No you can't (well you can, but something might blow up!)

If you wish to use the HiFi amp, make sure you get an AV amp with pre-outs and connect those to the source inputs on the Hifi amp). You'd then set the amp to a specific volume and equalize the speakers, then make sure the volume is the same when you're watching TV. Some amps have a fixed volume for AV.

*edit, you'd leave your front speakers connected to the Hifi amp.

*edit, yes, the MA's would be fine, just add centre and sub.

The Yamaha A810 would be a good watch with those speakers IMO.

No, definitely not.

The 4 plugs at the back of your Monitor BXs are for bi-wiring the speaker cable, where the treble and bass frequencies are separated - hence the bit of metal linking between each pair that'll link them currently as a crossover if you're running it in single wired mode. Don't disconnect this metal linking unless you are going to bi-wire!

There's much more about bi-wiring out there, but if you want to get into it, then you might get a bargain at the Bristol Show this weekend. I picked up a ready-made QED Silver Anniversary Bi-wire cable completely fitted with banana plugs in 2 x 2.5 metre lengths for around £35 a few years back, a complete bargain and one I still use with my Mission M73s.
