I've just thought of another....Biko, last track of Peter Gabriel's powerful 3.

And from political statement to utter superficiality - The Chauffeur, ending off Duran Duran's Rio in fine style (even before they made the grubby vid

Clare you have bigged up DD too many times now!

Once a Duranie etc...

Right,

First a tip of the ol' hat to Radiohead with Life in a Glass House from Amnesiac, that one makes the hairs on my arms stand up every time.

Now a mention to Nirvana with All Apologies on In Utero.

And as I'm going to see them at the O2 on Wednesday...

Hurt on The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails.

I know they aren't exactly of the uplifting variety but the thread is "great" tracks not "happy" tracks right?

All said though, I think Claire's wager of A Day In the Life may prove insurmountable.

Yes I think A Day In The Life is about the best song mentioned so far, but I think Tomorrow Never Knows from the mono version of Revolver is slightly better.

It's 1966, little miss teeny bopper is getting near the end of her new Fab Four album. It's great and even slightly weird so far but what the hell is that noise coming from the Dansette on the closing track? "Turn off your mind, relax and float down stream. It is not dying. It is not dying".

Super, smashing, great!

For me Gabriel wise it has to be `The Flood`, stunning last track from his debut solo album. Like yourself I rate `The Chauffeur` very highly. It rounds off one of the best pop albums of all time in fine style.

"Forgotten Sons" from Marillion's Script from A Jesters Tear.
Especially after last weeks events in Afghanistan. Different war same theme
Lets hope they are not forgotten.

Speedway - Moz (Vauxhall & I)

Hey,Hey, My My - Neil Young (Rust Never Sleeps)*

*Will Oasis desist from bludgeoning this song to death? Will the gormless Gallagher brothers cease to exist musically, please? Judging by their offerings post-album number 2 they probably have, now I come to think of it. Christ, they make the ******** Kasabian look musically nimble. Hollow anthems ahoy.

Please don't anyone let there be a backlash to the backlash. I know it's ever so passe to slag off Oasis, and has been for years, but these things are often cyclical and I couldn't bare it if people who should know better started venerating the Burnage blunderers once more.

Even the above mentioned Steven Patrick flirted with the partonising notion that these pub rockers-gone-global were sufficiently imbued with Manc grit to mean something. No, Moz, no.

Many great ends already stated, I feel that adding Caroline No from Pet Sounds, gives the Beatles a run for the finishing post. Also Emerald by Thin Lizzy off Jailbreak is up there.

How about a singalong to REM - Eponymous , A most uplifting song in current climes,

It's the end of the world as we know it , AND I FEEL FINE!, FINE! ,FINE!

Yes, though the sarcasm in Stipe's voice is so thick you could spread it on your toast and choke on it...

In The Lap Of The Gods..... Revisited. From Queen's 'Sheer Heart Attack'. My fave Queen song and closes S.H.A perfectly.

'Hollow' from Pantera's 'Vulgar Display Of Power'.

'How Could I' from 'Focus' by Cynic.

Heart Of The Sunrise from Fragile,Yes

Had my doubts after writing this, then just played on Spotify and can confirm.... yes, a perfect ending to a great album

Two fine Gabriel choices, but Suppers Ready from Foxtrot is his finest hour
