Welcome Tear Drop. You can bash my cows all you like, am not precious about it. And yes, lively - mass even - debate is encouraged and welcomed, as long as you come with an open mind and an open biscuit tin.

OK, so which Wharfedale speakers don't you like? The Diamond 9 or the Super
Linton? The Melton, the Denton or the Zaldek?

What is it you don't like about the Sondeck?
Don't like any Wharfedale's, simply awful - never before have I heard speakers destroy music so badly. The Linn Sondek is at least two decades behind in technology, and it adds serious amounts of distortion to the signal. Quite why people still think it competes as a 'serious' turntable is beyond me - fair enough as an entry model, but to think it provides serious quality or provides any kind of value for money is a joke. I have heard it enough times to know what it does, and does not, do. Overall the most overrated hifi component of all-time.

Thank you John. I have been on many forums and have had many paradigm shifts concerning my perception of both recorded music and music reproduction - hopefully I'm still open and willing to keep learning. Hopefully others are as well.

Well I do own some commercial kit, mainly in my home cinema, but mainly because forums are full of interesting people, interesting discussions and they can be places where you can learn new stuff.
Fair enough.

How long do you want this to go on? Hold on, I'll get out my hifi diary and give you dates, times and serial numbers as well. I used to work in a hifi shop a few years back and I had to put up with them all day long, more goddamn hours than I care to remember. THEY ARE WORTHLESS!

Probably not the worst but definitely the most disapointing was the new chinese made Quad ESL electrostatic speakers. Didn't get them at all. No drama, thrills or emotion about them just a dull wall of sound. But maybe I was listening to the wrong type of music to understand their strengths? Also the new AE monitors which looked stunning but not a patch (or how I remember) the originals being. Found this thread fairly amusing!

I heard a Bang & Olfson system a few years ago. One of the Beocentres I think. Very hi-tech, very expensive and sounded rubbish. No depth and minimum scaling. My mate liked the flashing lights though. LOL

Would have to say the £500 Rega Mira I tested at home back in 2001 - sounded no better than the Arcam Alpha 5 I had at the time. Both very warm and a little too wooly for my liking. The Marantz I have now (see signature line below) is a far more exciting proposition altogether and at the time £100 less.

Re The LINN CD12. You are crazy. It is the best CD player I have ever heard to date and is quite remarkable. I was going to say that Marantz CD players are dreadfully overated.

It was around 1996/7,I bought a Pioneer amp and cd player, can`t remember the model`s,the cd was ok but the amp was c@/p.So I had the bright idea of buying a graphic equaliser,a Genexxa from Tandy, and some Jamo D165 speakers.Thought it was a decent system until I went to my local dealer and listened to some Arcam,Cyrus and Marantz gear and realised mine was actually rubbish.I bought a Yamaha amp, kept the cd player, scrapped the graphic and speakers and bought some Mission speakers, this was better but I still wasn`t happy. So I decided to get myself the Arcam Alpha 9 amp,Marantz cd63 mk2ki signature cd player, better Mission speakers and decent cables, that`s the system I still have now and I love it,this sounded so much different to anything I`d had before, brilliant.I now know I`d never actually owned proper hifi until I bought this stuff. My mate recently bought a dvd player from a supermarket with hdmi connections,he said it was the dog`s b@@@@@@s,then the other day,he came round and saw my Toshiba HDEP 30 and Sharp BD-HP20S in action and swiftly admitted that his"brilliant"dvd player was not the dog`s b@@@@@@s but was in fact a load of b@@@@@@s.

It IS just a little opinion, but people keep asking 'why?' so I keep responding...don't know why though, only leads to more posts like yours.

This thread is verging on becoming more enraged than a, dare i say it, "what is the point in mains cables?" thread. TD does sound like you are making sweeping generalisations. I don't quite know how you came to the conclusion that we all like music here!
