Hello all - I slotted this BD into my player last night - and it refused to recognise it. I updated the software (the player had been asking me to do so for a month now), and still nothing.

Is it a fault with the (sratch-free) disc, or is it a player issue?

(it's a LoveFilm rental, if that makes any difference).

thanks

have you bd live turned off? havent got the same player or disc.. but usually issues are caused by bd live.. does the disc surface look dirty or damaged?

to turn off BD live, I just go into the menus and de-select "Allow disc to access Web"? Done that. The disc seems fine - no marks/scratches etc.

When you put it in, nothing happens - no menu, and the icon for a disc is just a question mark in a circle.

The version I have from Love Film plays fine on my BDPS370. However, I had Inception and that kept freezing despite be giving it a clean.

People don't treat rental discs very well...

Hi Big Aura,

This is probably the culprit. Often times if a disc is reported as scratched to these online rental services the common procedure for dealing with it is to lathe off a small layer at the bottom side of the disc to remove the scratched surface. This works pretty well with DVD but I think the fact that Blu-ray data lives so much closer to the surface of the disc can create problems with this procedure. I rent loads of BDs from lovefilm (average at least 3 a week) and every once in a very blue moon I get one that just won't play with no visible scratches and I fill out the form online to report the disc as unreadable and request a replacement which has always worked. The fact that the replacement has always worked leads me to believe that the offending disc may have lived through an attempted repair.

Really?? Surely this would cost more than just scrapping and replacing the disc???

As a +1 to the likely cause being a defective Lovefilm disc, I've successfully played it on my BDP-S550 several times with no hassle, and that is a whole generation older than your machine, so I'd imagine your probably unlucky and have got a bad one.

It is common practise. Especially since rental copies of films are not bought off the store shelf and are sold to rental firms at VERY much higher prices than our consumer retail price. I remember years ago when I had a stint working in a video rental shop a particular new release DVD was in the region of £60 per copy and it's day-and-date retail version was about £11. That's why you regularly see "Rental Copy - Not for Resale" printed on the discs.

Big Aura:

To Petherick - careful who/how you quote!

What do you mean? Did I say something out of turn? (Oops, I did it again!)

Big Aura - my humble apologies, I just realised what I did. Obviously haven't quite got to grips with editing quotes, I'll be more careful in future. Once again apologies!

No worries mate - I was only messing. I've yet to lose my temper on here with anyone!
