Watched this for the first time at the weekend, and really liked it.

Is it much underrated or did I just miss the hype first time round? (or

Yes, good film however I thought it showed Scorsese maybe, just maybe is reaching the end of his long term role of an influential, important director.

JohnDuncan:I thought it was great, am just glad I didn't read the synopsis on the back before I watched it, which gave away a key plot point........

So many films seem to do that these days, I try to avoid reading it if I can and refuse to watch/read/listen to reviews of films I want to see as invariably it set a preconception which can spoil your enjoyment.

Avoiding reading blurbs does though often leave me picking movies by titles, actors and directors only rather than concept which you could say is a bit like choosing books by their cover. Not a terrible thing in itself but can lead to a limited amount fo new movies making their way to my viewing space - it's a trciky dilema deciding whether to read the synopsis, glad I didn't on the departed.

You did miss the reviews first time round (not hype). Scorsese won his first ever Oscar for this film after ridiculously missing out with (among others), Raging Bull and Goodfellas.

If you liked The Departed try 'Infernal Affairs'. It's the original movie that the departed was based on. It's a chinese flick with subtitles but very good.

And no, that's not a typo. It is Infernal... i think.
