Test results as promised!!

Finally I managed to get around to testing the AV's i wanted and I have some pretty surprising results, well may not be that surprising to some, but they certainly were for me.

The speaker package of choice was the CM8 fronts, CMC Center, CM1 rears and PV1 sub.

First up was the AVR500, this AV looked beastly and I had read some decent reviews on it, the dealers wanted me to buy this above all of them and even went as far as telling me that it was 50% better than the Pioneer (also it was an ex demo priced at £1400, bargain!). As you can imagine I was eager to hear this perform. The movie of choice was The Dark Knight (tumbler scene sampled). The details was very warm and the sound effects relatively clear, however it sounded dull to my ears, there was nothing really special that was thrilling me, i remember sitting there and thinking my old 18 year old system at home sounds better!. Then of course the AVR500 does not have certain features like an Ethernet card (£450 add on) and no ability to take 1.4 HDMI (again an upgrade coming soon) However i was willing to overlook all of this, even the overheating issues and technical glitches this AV had if it were to just perform to my liking. Sadly it did not and i was left feeling somewhat disappointed in part, but generally quite relieved. Musically this AV was outstanding and Arcams solid reputation for Music was well justified when I listen to some Jazz and Rock! In fact this AV was the best out the lot for Music and produced sound that any music lover would be proud of!

AVR400 - Nothing new to report here, it was the same dull sound that came from the AVR500 to my ears, this receiver was more or less an AVR500 repackaged with the overheating issues removed and had the Ethernet card added with 1.4 HDMI capabilities. I should probably elaborate on what I mean by 'dull'. The movie, whilst sounding warm just lacked detail in some of the scenes, like the tumbler crashing through the wall and the subsequent flying particles of brick. There was nothing, no punch, no thrill, no desire to make me look over my shoulder in case something sis crash behind me. It just did not have the ability to utilise the CM8 packaged and make those speakers sing.

Musically, this sounded probably just as good for me as the AVR500; however i felt that the 500 brought out more detail in the sound tracks and just piped it. I would choose the AVR400 if it was a choice out of the two! Don’t get me wrong you may like that sound, but for me it was rather dull and lacklustre. I guess they are correct when they say it "you are either an Arcam lover or not" I am certainly in the ‘not' category.

Pioneer LX83 - This AV had it all the features, the looks and the power on paper to boast. Then watching the movie, it all just suddenly came to life, particles flying everywhere, it was an assault on my senses from all directions...I probably even had a tear roll down one side of my cheek from the sheer brutality of this system and assault on my senses. I was sold on this 100% at this point, much to the dismay of the dealer who probably hoped i would walk away with the AVR500!This receiver just gave the speakers that extra grunt and at 190W per channel you could feel it when the Rocket hit the truck and the tumbler crashed through a wall. This AV was far more detailed and the bright highs were to my liking.

Musically it was not too shabby, it was good, but the AVR400 and 500 easily won here and deliver more detail with their warm feel. The Pioneer is generally quite bright and this brightness does not suit everyone’s taste, especially with Music. However, having said this movies and music are still pretty thrilling.

So i plumped for the Pioneer and now it’s ordered, the deed is done and i'm waiting on my delivery. Incidentally I ordered the DS3's for my house.

I hope that was not too boring for you guys, I tried to be as blunt and straight to the point as humanly possible there.

Having been somewhat involved in your decision, it's good to hear how your journey finally concluded.

IMO You went about it in the right way - gather info and experiences of others, make your shortlist and then go and listen for youself.

I hope you thoroughly enjoy your new purchase and expect further updates when it's all hooked up.

The only problem I see with the above, is that you chose the last amp, which would have sounded better anyways as the speakers warmed up with usage (Unless theyd already been running for a few hours?)

They were warmed up before i went in to make it a fair test :) I should have added that to the opening post, but very good point there!

I would have, in an ideal world, loved to have tested the Denon 4311 and Onkyo 3008 too.

speakers warmed up????

at a guess dealer would not have opened up a brand new pair - so they'd have been on a demo loop anyway - so I'd say a non factor

interesting findings from OP though - thanks for sharing

do you know if EQ was on/off on the Arcam and or Pioneer ?

see question above please - do you know whether EQ was on/off on each receiver ?

only because that can make quite a dramatic difference to how each of the receivers sounds

I don't think you would've liked the Denon. It seems that you prefer a slightly brighter sound (& Pioneer is very good at that). Denon & Yamaha produce a relatively warm sound. I don't like the Pioneer for exactly this reason, because I prefer a warmer sound.

Buckshar - The EQ was on for all receivers.

Bigboss - There we have it, some love the warmer feel and some the brighter as you say. If our situation was reversed i would imagine you would opt for the Arcam AVR400 maybe.

Due to my choice of speakers I prefered the Pioneer with them. If i had a brighter speaker package I may have opted for another receiver with a warmer feel to tone them down.

I dont think you can really go wrong with the new AV's out there.

Speaking personally, I couldn't live with the Pioneer. I like my AV to have the same musical presentation as two channel ie. The better it is for stereo, the more I like it for 5.1.

The pioneer for 5.1 out performs most AV's when it comes to 5.1 home cinema..... In Stereo its great, but of course the Arcam is better in that area.

On another note (no pun intended there :) ), its all wired up, the stuff came yesterday and after spending 6 hours wiring it all up and positioning speakers I have have it sounding sweet. I cant wait for them to run in slightly and become even better. The CM8 with the LX83 is a winner and while im typing this im listening to some Prince on my speakers, it sounds very nice indeed! I will edit my signature in a bit to include what i have set up. But essentially this is it

42" Pioneer LED TV, Pioneer LX83, Pioneer BDP-LX54, PS3, Water cooled Xbox 360, Wii, Sky HD, i7 PC overclocked with 4870 X2, CM8 Fronts (Bi-Amped), CMC Center (Bi-Wired), DS3 Dipoles, PV1 Sub. Van Den Hul M.C. Snowtrack >Halogen Free< wiring.

At the risk of being lynched (and not wishing to start a row), I would recommend you try something like Clearer Audio Copper-line alpha p/c. It's a great cable and can be returned if it proves ineffective.

IMO AV amps respond well to a shielded cable with better connections at each end....but then I'm probably deluded. :(

Just a thought.

On a side note, what do you think about banana plugs are they worth it? Will anything be gained?

Duaplex - you have a 42" Pioneer 'LED' tv?

I thought Pioneer only did plasmas at that size? And I only recall a 32" LCD personally

Banana plugs or spades(more awkward), if correctly fitted, make life handier, protect the cable end from corrosion and stop any stray bits of wire causing grief). They do nothing for sound quality (imo).

Good choice, I have the LX83, having just upgraded the speakers to Kefs I ran the macc setup again, the only issue I find with the Pioneer auto setup is that the volume levels are wouln right down and I don't really see why, I have to overide and wind them back up especially the centre. I think I need a specialist to come and balance the sytem or i but myself a soundmeter download the software and try to do it myself! my only mistake was my my right speaker chord odysseys are to short for comfort the TV unit was longer than I thought so go to replace them with 3mtr lengths and sell off the 2mtr lengths..any suggestions as to where to sell them.
