I need to put a basic sound system in a kitchen cum dining room. Size 7m x 4m x 2.24m, Hard wood floor. The syestm needs to provide DAB Radio, CD player and at least USB access. Would a Denon M39 driving two speakers be sufficent? An alternative for a Marantz 603 possibly driving 4 ceiling speakers has been suggested. Help!

It is a fair sized room.

Marantz is a good option. Also check these:

If the budget stretches, the Ruark r4i is a nice all in one system that provides what you need. My kitchen diner is large L shape approx 8m by 5m in the longest dimensions, and it fills the room very well for a compact system with built in speakers. Can't comment on how it sounds compared to the other recommendations, but it does look lovely!

Having said that, I'd go for the Marantz MCR603 at the prices you can get those for now, with some decent sub-£200 bookshelf speakers it would cost around £500. Offers a lot more functionality and I guess, better sound.

If you're going all in one plus sub-£200 speakers I'd listen to the Marantz side by side with the denon. When I did the same I couldn't justify the extra hundred quid for the marantz.

Should have a listen to the Arcam Solo Mini, for sound quality wipes the floor with anything from the likes of marantz and Denon of that size unit.
