Surround Sound for small room

I have a small tv room and would like to add surround sound to my set-up but am wary of getting something that will be too much for the room. The room is 4m by 3.25m. My current set-up is: Samsung le32a558 tv, Pioneer bdp-51fd blu-ray, denon rcd-m37dab micro system

That room should be fine for a modest AV amp and some compact 'sub and sats'-type speakers.

And I would be remiss in my duties if I didn't tell you that the September issue, with subscribers from tomorrow and in the shops next Weds, has group tests of both affordable AV receivers and compact speaker packages.
