Hi all,

I am close to buy my new home cinema set-up based on the Tannoys
DC6T (front) + DC6 LCR and DC4 and the back. The only thing I am
missing is the sub. What are the alternatives to the Tannoy’s own TS-12
sub? Can I get something better for the money? It doesn’t match the
system either way (visually I mean). As far as I know you can get
better ones for the money. Any suggestions?

I heared few options but from the 1k bracket range which is too much...

Thanks in advance…

Stone - what is your budget? As you know the DC6 speakers are excellent high end speakers and they would benefit from a sub that isn't over-awed by them. I know you have been suggested the Velodyne MicroVee which can be had for less than £600. However that sub MAY be a better match for the DC4's. I say May because I'm no system matching expert & really you would benefit from talking to some dealers. Hopefully someone can recommend a sub which is within your budget & matches the DC6's. If they can't you have two options. Downgrade your speakers so that you can afford the matching sub or just get a 5.0 system for now and start saving for the sub you really want.By the way what amp do you have (or plan buying)?

Hi bransleydave.

So.... the speakers have to be DC6T (the 4's look really small and my TV is wall hanged so I think it would look strange). The budget you are right it would be around £600 mark. The question is is it better to have 5.0 or 5.1 with that kind of sub...Thay can't be that bad, can they? I think if I won't buy it now I will never buy it, so it's not even a question of saving some more money... I really like DC6T's size and I don't have (will have) enough money to buy sub for £1k. Is there nothing that will improve the system for around £600????? The full set-up comes with TS-12 from Tannoy which is less then £500... That is the biggest sub they have. I was thinking about buying something else (hopefully better) as the ts-12 is all black it could be anything (different brand).

BK Monolith? Do a search for reviews. It's very popular and probably the best value subwoofer out there and come in a variety of finishes that might get close to the Tannoy finish. I use SVS myself but I think they would be over your budget.

Where is the place you can buy SVS's (on-line)? Also, how much over the budget? I read a lot about them but can't find any place selling them to check the prices.

I understand you have the new one....Standard 12Plus is not that bad pricewise. Is it still really good sub for movies and music?

We tend to use the Sunfire subwoofers with the Tannoy packs if people are looking for a little more punch. The new TS1201 is acutally a very good sub and a lot better looking than the outgoing TS12.

SVS is only available from one distributor so you wont find it in store.

Sunfire is great but the price!!!! ;-( and about the TS1201 WHF gave it only 3 stars.... They weren't impressed, otherwise I would go for that one.... Shame as now I have to spend all that time looking for a sub! I want to finally but it and be happy that I bought the best my money can buy....

Yeah I was surprised by the TS1201 review. We have the range here and initially they were a bit short of oomph but now they are fine.

The HRS8 is just beyond your price point and will offer a lot of sound for you money. The other route is a big REL. There are some good deals going around at the moment.

Hmm, do you tihnk it's better to go for a smaller but higher quality one (like HRS8 - 8'') or for the bigger one but ...you know - for the same price but 12'' woofer. What would be better buy....

TBH 8" subwoofers aren't subwoofers at all IMHO. It's simple physics. Subwoofers are all about moving air. Bigger = better. Simple as that.

It is not always like that. There are plenty of big subs that just rumble along and distort rather than provide clean fast accurate bass. A decent listen will reveal massive differences.

I'd definitely have a listen to a few subs including the Tannoy ones, as reviews aren't everything and there can be surprises.

I don't doubt some of the sub specialists do better subs than Tannoy, but sometimes it's about the sound you prefer.

When demoing sub / sat systems I found for me the TS300 was at least a match for the PV1 for music and films. Also, I seem to remember the TS12 got 5 stars not long ago, so surprised to hear the TS1201 only got 3.

That certainly isn't the case with SVS or BK though.

Thank you all for all replays. That's the thing.. I don't want anything that will "just rumble along and distort".... It won't be playing really loud. I jut want it to be really good deep and precise....

What about the Velodyne ones? MicroVee, CHT-12Q or Impact series?

There's a new sub review in this month's mag (landed through my letterbox today
emotion-21.gif
), the Velodyne SPL-800 Ultra. 5 Star rating at £1,000. You should be able to pick it up a little less.

In the same article there's also mention of the legendary B&W PV-1 for £950 and the B&W ASW610XP for £700. Also both 5 star performers. You should certainly be able to seek out the latter for around your budget

Just got mine today.... Will have a look...

There is more and more options for subs for around £1k!!!! I didn't want to spend that much.... Is it really worth spending that much monay on the sub for these speakers. I am hoping I will have excellent results with some £600 sub.... Would B&W610XP be better then Tannoy's TS12?

Or maybe even better:

Tannoy Ts12

B&W610XP

Monitor Audio RXW12

Nice shortlist. Which one would be the best?

Thanks

Not heard a bad word about the B&WASW610 - link below @ £440.

or the MA seems good value at £550

I haven't done any research into either of them (or extensive price searches). I'll let you do that.

I'd definitely include the BK Monolith in your list, as while I haven't heard it it seems to be widely regarded as one of the best subs in your price range.

Oh yes I forgot all about the BK Monolith. Another sub with nothing but good reviews

Here is one "I found it hard to grasp the lack of
difference between the sound output of the mighty Monolith, at some
£407, and that of my resident £2,500 REL. "

Soz - If I knew how to make the font smaller I would.
