Hi guys, I am thinking of storing all my cds on a nas but havent a clue where to start. First of all how much are they, i really dont want to spend a fortune, and do they come with the drivers already in. Do i HAVE to conect the nas directly to my router etc. Sorry I know I,m sounding thick but i never thought I,d want to go down this route but just lately been looking at the naim unityqute and quite fancy it as an upgrade but thats in the future. I just need to know about ripping my collection to nas and connecting it to my current system for now. Thanks guys

A WD MyCloud is about £115 for 3TB. It is very simple to use. It is less than 2 minutes to connect it on wifi. All the drivers are already installed, including the dnla software for upnp.

Next, transfer the music files to the MyCloud. If the music is on CDs, just rip them using something like dBpoweramp. Select the WDMyCloud as the destination folder.

On a unitiqute, select the upnp input. Select WDMyCloud. All your music will show up. You can chose by Artist list, Album list etc.

Now the important bit. Select a decent wine. Get very comfortable in the chair. Sit back, relax, tap your feet.

Job done. It really is that easy.

Well jj many thanks for the reply, you made it all sound so easy, which I,m sure it is..........i have to say i refer the last bit lol.................only question i do have is, when you say rip the cds using bdpoweramp is that something that i download onto the nas ?

You download dBpoweramp to your computer. there are others such as ExactAudioCopy. Either one will do. Open dBpoweramp as you would any other program on your PC. Place the CD in the PC tray as normal. The software will detact it automatically. In the bottom left box, it will ask you for a file type. FLAC is fine.

Initially you can try this and save it to your PC, just save it to your Music library. This will get you used to the software. You can rip all your music collection like this if you want. The Unitiqute can play them from there but you would always need your computer switched on to play music, hence the rise in the use of NAS drives.

Later, when you add the MyCloud, just copy it over as you would any other file operation.

You really will be surprised by how simple the whole thing is. I certainly was.

The only thing I would add, is to start with just one CD, transfer the files onto the NAS, and then make sure your happy with the way the information is presented when you play the file. For example, I stream from a WDTV Live with my av receiver, and when I played an album, it played it in track alphabetical order, rather than track order, so I had to re-rip the CD with track numbers added to the title, so it would then play in track order. Your system may do this for you, but it's worth checking everything after you've ripped your first CD to make sure that everything's as you want it.

wow thanks guys, my brain hurts now, though i guess you are making it sound simple although obviously i have the marantz and not the naim so i guess it still works the same way. I will have a think then maybe when i.m ready take the streaming plunge.

Have a look on You Tube, I'm sure they'd be some tutorials on how to use DB Poweramp or EAC.

I'm in the same boat, thinking about moving all my music file to a NAS as my hard drive is full.

One question - How to I attach the NAS to my A/V amp? I have a Marantz SR6005 that I am happy with (and can't afford to replace anyway) and I presume I need to physically attach the NAS to the amp or do I need a DAC inbetween?

.

No need to physically attach it, as the amp supports DNLA and uPnP. It connects wirelessly to the internet. So does the NAS device. The anplifier will find the NAS music files and play them. No need for a DAC.
