Not really. What works works, regardless of any mismatch in specifications or price difference. It's a case of starting with one or the other and then finding the right match that suits you. Personally, I'd start with the speakers to suit the room, then find the right amplifier for them.
I totally agree with David. For example in one system, by amount spent I have 97.5% speakers to 2.5% amplification. In another system I have 20% speakers to 80% amplification. Both systems sound fine. It all depends what you can get for what money.
I've got the truly great Pioneer A-400 amplifier (£300) and fwiw, i've used the A-400 with supporting components such as KEF Reference Model 3.2 speakers, Naim CDX/XPS MK1, Stax DAC-1Xt, etc. 🙂
Yep i agree with the above. I got an AV amp which cost 6x less than my speakers & it works well. If you like the sound compared to other systems then that's what matters.
I reckon I will audition the ATC SCM40's, ProAc D18's and maybe a Monitor Audio model higher up the range than my current MA RX6's. But the caveat is they will have to sound a heck of a lot better/different to my RX6's in their current setup to make a purchase.
