I started out buying floorstanders, but once I purchased my first set of stand mount speakers I was hooked. The way they can disappear in the room, they don't overpower the room (even these substantial Dyns are ok in my small room). You can sell and ship them way easier. They look dynamite. And most importantly, I think in general they sound superior. I can't see ever going back to floorstanders.

Floorstanders have an appeal but in my experience they always sound muddied and boxy in comparison. Would you count these as standmounters? Blurrs the boundaries a bit...
Igglebert, I have a similar pair of stands for my speakers (are the proper ones supplied by B&W) .... makes a huge difference in my room, as it raises them to the correct height (tweeter level)

When you say stand mount speaker it rings of being small('ish). It's easy to forget that some stand mounters make floorstanders look small and neat
mine came with castors that can be removed and replaced with spikes ... am using the spikes as I don't move them around
Iprefer standmounts myself, as floor standers just seem alot more imposing in a room. Even my GF thinks the Super dreads in the black are quite good looking with the speakers on top.

It would have to be a pair of SPECIAL floorstanders to replace my Proac tablette ref. sigs. these speakers have made me beleive in standmounts!
I've always had standmounts over floorstanders. I'm currently running the Totem Mani II signature's which are very good indeed and as leenorris say's if i replaced them with floorstander's they would have to be very special.

This would make an excellent BIG QUESTION article in the magazine. Blind tests comparing standmount and floorstander from the same range (perhaps two pairs over a few different manufacturers).
Comparison could be:
Floorstanders
Standmounts
Standmounts + sub
I think their was a similar article many many years ago that covered floorstanders vs standmounts and the standmounts came out on top for all manufacturers except mission 78 series.
It would be interesting to see an update to this and one that will also include a sub.

Speaking of stand mounts, got a chance to listen to the roksan TR-5s at the audio show on Friday. They were paired with (what else) K2 amp and CDP. They were impressive. Actually better bass than I expected from such small drivers, but it was the detailed high frequencies that really impressed. Quite good indeed.

i also am in the stand mount club preferring them over floorstanders so far anyway - as mentioned they just seem to deliver better all round music for me - but then i dont like overpowering bass so maybe it suits me

Cheers crusaderlord, the contours are magic to me. But I have a feeling, that you might not love them as you have to really like bass. It's only there if the music has it, but when the music does have it, wow... It's not fat bloated bass though. Dyns have lots of bass, but it's very high quality bass in my opinion. My speakers are a bit difficult to classify in terms of standmount/floorstander but they take the idea of stand mount and run with it. Its all about driver isolation so that there is no stand/cabinet so to speak. The results show the advantages to this approach. Make all floorstanders ive heard sound mushy and badly organised. I do sometimes calmour for a bit more bass but the trade off, ie what i would lose to gain bass from a floorstander, is not something im willing to accept. Might try a sub when i can afford a good one.
I've yet to hear a small standmount that delivers better bass/treble than a huge 3 or 4 -way transmission design floorstander such as IMF TLS80's or even my old B&W DM2

i should have been clearer - i do like bass - but not the overblown wooly variety which overpowers the rest of the music. The Neats i own are pretty good for bass, but it tends to be detailed and punchy rather than overwhelming.
my brother has a similar Arcam set up to me but with monitor audio floorstanding speakers - it really changes the presentation of the music - i prefer mine for sure, everything is better balanced and more detailed.
but never say never - when i have the money i would really like to try out the Kudos X2 speakers.

If there is strong bass on the recording, I like to 'feel it' as well as hear it (I enjoy blues) ...
If I am listening to an artist such as Katie Melua or Melody Gardot, where there is very little bass, but strong vocals, I like the sound to be crystal clear with very good detail ....

I have a pair of Usher Be-718's side by side with a pair of Mission 753's in quite a large room. No question that the Usher's fill the room with sound with ease. The bass performance of the smaller stand mounts is clearly superior to the 753's
