What do you think guys? Experience and thoughts please.

Honestly, I don't think you can compare as they are two different beasts. For example, if you need to grab a beer from the fridge, then speakers will allow you to keep hearing, whereas unless you are running wireless headphones, you'll have to take them off.

How thick are your walls? do you have many neighbours etc? If so, headphones might be a better option instead of having your neighbours ask you to turn it down all the time, and vice versa.

No, it's only you who thinks it's OK to come to a headphone enthusiast forum specifically to diss headphones.

actually, I didn't think there was anything wrong with his post either, he just said he preferred speakers, he didn't diss anything. So, actually there's two of us that thinks it's ok ;p

Thank you. There is no way it was bad manners at all. I love my HP set up but given the choice I would chose my speakers every time. This year I spent a few quid on my HP set up as I had new neighbours and I do tend to play music loud. In the past HP listening just did not cut it compared to my speaker set up. Thats why i invetsed some cash this year and I love my current HP set up. Certainly would not diss Headphones. They serve a purpose and mean i can listen to music whenever I feel like it, and now the enjoyment is also there.

"I invested heavily this year in my headphone set up but I still much prefer speakers. They fulfill different needs in my opinion. I love my HP set up but if the neighbours are out then it's speakers every time for me"

There is nothing in the above that contributes to a headphone forum. This is a headphone enthusiast forum, not a forum for saying "I like speakers better". Unless a person has something technical to contribute that necessitates including the speaker preference, then it constitutes a negative to the headphone forum. I don't really care that you or the next guy has warm and fuzzy feelings for those remarks, I simply and elegantly point out that the person is wrong to be posting preference for speakers in a headphone forum, unless there's something about the post that has useful information concerning headphones. The fact that you don't "get it" falls on you, not me. I like speakers a lot myself, but I don't say I *prefer* them in a headphone forum. If I did that I'd be stupid and probably regarded as a troll, so I don't do it.

Actually, quite the opposite. Whether I run into different rooms, go outside to the car, 100 other things, headphones give me the same exact sound everywhere. No speakers can do that.

That's not what you said - read the above post - you said "no further comments from me", and yet you go on and on and on.....

As far as I can see nothing ill mannered has been said at all. The thread title is "speakers vs headphones" and Womaz has said he prefers speakers. I do not see an issue, he has not dissed headphones in any way.

I don't see why people need to be like this on audio forums. It's all opinion and personal preference there are no right or wrong responses to this thread.

Would you go to a Corvette forum and say you prefer Porsche? No - trolls do that. Now if you read what I actually said, where it's reasonable to mention speakers in a pro-headphone context, then you'd be discussing relevant information.

Dale, I have always respected your knowledge on anything regarding headphones, you are the man to ask.

But here I must disagree with you as it is exactly as Womaz/MeanandGreen stated: the thread title is "speakers vs headphones", so comments regarding both are bound to be posted. Whilst they may not meet with your criteria for discussion this is a public forum, so just chill out man... no one is dissin' anything here, apart from you dissin' other members.

Actually, you know very well that I spend a lot of time helping people here. I didn't start off calling the other guy a troll, he tried to say I'm a troll. Given the simple scenario that (regardless of the "thread title"), this is a headphone forum and you don't post that you prefer speakers, with *no* other questions or information about headphones, then you should get it like everyone else. But if you think that it's OK to go to a Corvette forum and say you prefer Mustangs, with no further information, then you need to do some more reading and see what's wrong with that.

Headphones versus speakers, when it's an *inquiry* as to the differences etc., is OK for me, but when it's to post only "I prefer speakers", then it's not OK. I've seen that on numerous forums, and it always smells like trolling. Which is what's happening here. You saw where the guy promised to end his posting in the discussion, and that he really didn't have that intention. That's trolling.

Admire and respect you Dale for all the good advice you offer. However, if you think what's happened here is trolling then you should take a look over on the hi-fi forum section where you will find many instances of thread derailments, hi-jacks, and also your interpretation of "trolling" aplenty. It's just the nature of the forum, you either live with it or ignore it, but always be prepared to let it go and run its' course. No one means any harm by what they post.

So "everyone means well". Well, no, not everyone. But my suggestions aren't about reading people's minds, they're about someone creating a thread with probably good intentions, and then others jumping in and seizing the opportunity to say why they prefer Mustangs over Corvettes on a Corvette forum. Yes, any such thing can be viewed as harmless and legitimate if you ignore reason and logic. This is a low-traffic forum - very low traffic in fact, and it's very sensitive to disruption by people who might not mean well, but then again I'm not a mind-reader, I just respond to what's posted.

Gentleman, can we please stop derailing the OP's thread? Over half the thread has now been spent on debating bad forum etiquette. If we want to debate etiquette further, I think it's only fair to start a new thread to do so.

That's a great idea, but what would be even better is to just have a moderator change the thread title, so it doesn't encourage people posting negative messages in the headphone forum. People can obviously post all sorts of negative messages anyway, in any thread they choose, but changing the title could help to clarify that the thread isn't meant for people to sell speakers on the headphone forum.

Sorry Dalethorn, if you read the thread properly, the first question form Daniel is asking for advise for whether he should buy speakers or headphone setup for his home use. Please stop attacking someone for giving an opinion, your the only one who has a problem with womaz comments. I have headphones where i live because I'm in flats, so i had to sell my Kef ls50 speakers. I'm now using sennheiser 650 for home use, but because of the inconvenience and the uncomfortability of them, i don't use them as much as i did the speakers. If i had a choice i would go back to speakers, I will sell the 650 and try to find something more comfortable to wear before i give up on headphones.

So, if we don't compare the flexibility of having speakers vs. headphones, and just focus on the actual sound. What would be the best bang for the buck?

Seems to me that Dale is right albeit a bit blunt and tactless - although the thread title is speakers vs headphones, the specific question asked was not about what people prefer or why, but what gives the best sound for your money. Personally I'd say headphones win everytime in that aspect. I can't imagine any speakers costing £300 would sound anything like as good as my HD650's.

I not only read it properly, I explained the differences properly, and even made a positive suggestion about the title.

But rather than be *helpful* here, your contribution is to add hostility. Now that says bad about you, not me.

The title is an invitation for people to come to the headphone forum and bash headphones. This isn't some strange accident, whatever the intent of the OP. This has happened on several unmoderated headphone forums where I post, and it always turns bad, even before I post anything. Use your common sense. Change the title next time, and everyone will be happier.

Maybe, if there was a thread was headed with "Corvette vs Porsche?". Although a more accurate analogy would be something like "Car vs Motorcycle?", as we're not discussing manufacturers.

I came on and gave my opinion - why isn't anyone having a go at me?

It is a shame this got a little silly. Dale as you can see I have a few people who back me on this and I said I would let others be the judge of whether I was bad mannered. Its clear now that only you felt i was .

It felt like a bit of a personal attack if I am honest which is a shame. Like someone else has said I have always respected your opinion on headphones and unbeknown to you I seek out your you tube reviews and the amazon reviews as they are excellent and always thorough and informative. My knowledge of headphones and hifi is limited I admit so I use forims to get information. I would never and have never dissed HPs. Nor have I ever dissed anyone on the internet. Infact its a pet hate of mine . faceless keyboard warriors. I still have no idea why you took my post so badly

It would br nice to get an apology........but either way lets leave it at this, and no hard feelings. I am sure you will help me out in the future when I have a headphone queery.

to have speakers that match the sound quality of Sennheiser HD800's I believe one has to go past 10.000 pound. But on the other hand if one does not like listening through HP's it is different story.

"....a few people back me on this...."

well, if that were relevant, then how about the people who backed putting Mandela in jail, or some of those Russian guys? You need to read a book on logic so you can understand that you just committed a fallacy.

But if you want to trade apologies, then you apologize for trolling and I'll apologize for hurting your feelings.
