Speakers for Naim Nait 5i

Hi,

This is my first post, and I'm something of a beginner. I've recently purchased a second hand Naim Nait 5i (2004 I believe). I'm going to be feeding it from a laptop spdif through a Beresford TC-7510 DAC (possibly upgraded to a Caiman soon).

I heard the Nait paired with some Neat Motive 2s and this combo was what made me make the purchase.

To be honest, most of the kit at this level is a bit beyond my price level, so I'm really looking at secondhand gear. Are there any other speakers I should be looking out for that work equally well with the Nait 5i?

I recently missed some Neat Motive 2s for £550 (were £985 new) so this is about my maximum outlay.

Unless there are some other options that are as compact as the Neats, I'd probably be looking at standmounters. The room size is about 12ft square, and my music preference is for mostly acoustic/folk/indie.

For that budget, Rega R3's from Acoustica £349 brand new in box + £20 del, leaves just over £100 for some NAC A5 (2x3.5m terminated) from your local audio delaer.

I have no links to these sellers, just where I bought my gear from and recieved great sevice. I am not in the HIFI industry.

Neat Motives are superb speakers (yes i am biased).

WHF have frequently recommended in their Naim reviews use with Neat Motive as well. So really if you can bear to wait and save maybe i would try and hold on for the ideal speakers if you can.

I would also agree from posts over the last year or so that Rega is a good alternative but will you always then be thinking about a future upgrade to Neat anyway ?

Why not try the Neat Motive 3 - i have these standmounts and they are excellent. 2nd hand i would expect them to get closer to your budget too.

EPOS could be a good substitute for the Neat Motives.

Nothing for sale there at the moment, but the Neat online shop is a good source of cosmetically-imperfect speakers from the company from time to time

Hi,

I've seen four pairs of Motive 2s sell in the last two weeks (two on the online auction house and two on forums). They've all sold for between 500 and 575, so don't feel you missed a great deal - if you hold on and are happy with that sort of price then I'm sure you'll pick up another pair.

You could also look at AVI Neutrons and ProAc Tablette Reference 8 Signatures if you want nice standmounters. Floorstanders either wait for some Neats to pop up, or better still some Neat Elites, or Dali Ikon 6 which are superb, if a little ugly.
