I am going to make some oak speaker stands for my B&W 685s. How do I determine the best height to make them?

Or slightly higher and or in centre of screen?

hi Robin, I presume your from Kidderminster? There doesn't seem to be any Hi-fi shops in Worcester anymore, is there a good one out your way?

I have been using Music matters in Stratford and Audio T Cheltenham.

Cheers John (Evesham)

Speakers are presently sat on the floor down the side of sofa, and they sound pretty good there, so I hope they shine when there on stands.

Why would they need to be in the centre of the screen? I assumed he was talking about a music system though (although I don't think he is now).

yes, music system. I am sitting opposite sofa. Only place to put speakers that's why I want to raise them so there not hindered by sofa.

its not in the lounge, it's the kitchen. Job to explain..we have small lounge area in kitchen with wood burner, very cosy in winter and can listen without anyone wanting to watch TV as that's in the lounge.

Wouldn't it make more sense to sit ON the sofa?

Oh, right, so you are sitting opposite the sofa? Just asking because it'll sound a bit odd if you're sitting on the sofa with the speakers either side of your head.

I'm with you, wish I could do the same but we have no heating in our kitchen at all, the fridge switched itself off about three weeks ago and hasn't restarted since!

Actually the rest of the house isn't much warmer...

Surely LHC, you have heating?

Not in the kitchen no, the central heating we have got (it isn't in every room) struggles to warm the house effectively and being on Calor Gas a full tank of LPG is well over 600 quid. If we left the heating on long enough to heat the house properly in this kind of weather we'd go through a full tank in three weeks. So we light a big fire in the living room and stay in there generally.

With megawatts of power between yr legs?

*blank face*. Oh, right, I see what you mean, no, that's for cooling, it runs near absolute zero you know (which apparently ISN'T as cold as you can get any more)...

But colder than absolute is actually hotter, right? Trying to figure out if I actually understood what I read... Energy will transfer form a negative temp particle to a poitive temp particle, heating it up?

Err, yeah, must admit I struggled to follow the logic behind it! The energy level is higher for the negative temperature but I didn't quite figure out why that makes it colder...
