I haven't downloaded any software updates. I'm not sure how to check which version I am using. Will have a play around and let you know. Presumably it's the latest as the player is only a couple of weeks old. However I don't know how long it was in the shop for before I bought it!!

I'd say it's highly likely it's not so worth getting it hooked up to the internet to check for updates.

I recently replaced my hdmi cables, and I used to have a stutter while watching avatar, but when I played it yesterday for about 20 minutes, I did not see any stutter. It could be worth changing your hdmi cable with a higher quality one ( from ebay? ). I "only" paid £22 for a 1m Qed reference hdmi 1.4 cable, which has a recommended retail price of £50.

I have a Sony BDP S370 and a Samsung UE40C6510 LED and I have the same problem. I have only had the player a week and it stutters on all the blu rays I have watched. I have watched DVD's and they have been fine (so much for new technology), Avatar was the first film I watched in Blu ray (ever) so I was quite disappointed, the picture is amazing its just every 20 seconds or so it seems to jump a frame or lag. It is still watch-able it is just a split second thing but I bought a Blu ray player to get a better picture!! I paid about £40 for my HDMI so it can't be that, my next step is to try swapping the player. I read all the reviews on this player and thought I was getting a good affordable player.
