so andrew,

i have an sony 820, ps3, toshiba ep30 hddvd all of which output all the new hd audio linear pcm

i was going to upgrade to an ep35 and sony s350 br player because i was under the assumption that bitstream the audio via hdmi to my receiver was the best quality i could get higher bit rate etc.

so is linear pcm the same as, worse than or better than bistreaming true hd audio to a receiver.

and is onboard decoding better or not

lee37 previously wrote that LPCM was not as good as Dolby TruHD or DTS-MA.

This is most definitely not true especially if there is a LPCM 96/24 track available.

DTS-MA and Tru-HD are both Lossless codecs designed to store data up to 24/192 in less space than a PCM track would take up. ÿThis is called Lossless compression. ÿOther types of this are FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) and ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Compression) . ÿThe very idea behind these formats is that what you put it is what you get out. ÿA Zip file analogy is often used to explain this. ÿWhen zipped, a file takes up less room on your PC but, when uncompressed, the file is unchanged.

A player that supports onboard decoding of DTS-MA and TruHD but streams only LPCM, as in the case with the Sony PS3, will be an easy way of introducing yourself to the world of HD Audio. ÿYou just wont have a little light on your receiver that says DTS-MA... big deal! ÿ: )
