Can anyone give me any ideas why when i place a HDMI cable into my Sony STR-DA1200ES amp that I have video but no audio out? I have set my PS3 to allow audio with an HDMI cable but once I do this I get video out from the amp but no audio. I plan to use the PS3 and a Virgin Media HD box both with HDMI cables into the am. Then run a HDMI cable out of the amp to my plasma. So this may have something to do with the PS3 and not the amp. I am still trying to findout if the Virgin Media HD box sends audio out when using an HDMI cable too!

Because the HDMI connections on the 1200 are merely switching - ie they can pass through the signal, and switch between HDMI inputs, allowing a single HDMI connection to the TV, but the receiver doesn't do anything else with the information carried on the connector.

So whatever source you use with the Sony receiver, you need an extra digital or analogue audio hook-up.

Hi and thank you for the quick replay and info. So you saying all the Sony STR-DA1200ES is doing is sending out the video to my plasma. For audio i need to use an audio cable to send sound that i have an HDMI cable fitted with. So if i was to get hold of one of the new Onkyo TX-SR505 or any of the Onkyo TX range of amps?

Yup.

The TX-SR505 is the same as the Sony in this respect - to get audio over HDMI you'd need the TX-SR605 or above, or Sony's STR-DG910 or STR-DA3300ES, for example.

But it seems a bit extravagant to change the receiver just to save a couple of digital cables.
