Im not sure which one to get, i like the sound of getting a PS3 so when im bored i have something to do but i also want the quality of a Blu Ray player, is there really much difference between them.

Also to use the PS3 do you have to use the the hand controller, im getting sony everything, so can i use it from the tv remote.

The latest dedicated Blu-ray players are now better than the PS3 in terms of all-out performance but the PS3 is still no shirker and, as you say, offers much greater flexibility.

You can't operate the PS3 from your TV remote but you can buy a Blu-ray remote for the PS3 for around £20.00 which negates the need to use the SixAxis controller. The Blu-ray remote can also be used to operate the new Play TV add-on for the PS3 which, from my first trials in the shop, works extremely well.

How do you define performance? From experience, the PS3's image is just as good as the new standalones (unless you're looking for stray pixels with a magnifying glass), and it's still the quickest machines when it comes to loading, navigating and even BD-Live features. I can't comment on its HD audio capabilities as I have an older amp, which is why I went for a standalone player that internally decodes and outputs via analogues.

I'm not saying the PS3 is the best option (it wasn't for me), just that it's still ahead of the game in some respects. However, it's hardly a fair comparison given that the PS3 is an advanced computer heavily subsidised by Sony.

Personally I'd go for a standalone though, especially now that the S550 is available for £257 delivered! Silly price, and £18 less than I paid for mine delivered last week!

Some advantages of PS3

  • It plays games
  • It plays DVDs, DVD-R/+R/RW, DL, CDS etc + BD (pretty good)
  • It upscales DVD and DVD-R (component). Can upscale 1080i/10080p ('double' setting) 720p ('normal' setting)
  • You can put a large hard drive (standard 2.5" sata) in it in ten minutes without invalidating your warranty. So it a media player. too.
  • You can browse the internet ( dont like this, maybe wth a BT keyboard is ok)
  • It decodes Dolby True HD
  • Value for money. It costs less to buy than it costs to make (ie it is subsidized by Sony)
  • Upgradable firmware by user

What I dont like

  • Blutooth remote (although there is a toggle and remote that can be plugged in to USB to make it IR. But I think that this device will not wake up PS3 from standby. Maybe this is due to the fact that the USB is dead during standby anf BT only remain live)

Much as I admire the versatility of my PS3 , it does make quite a racket when playing . You should perhaps bear this in mind if you tend to watch quiet or reflective type films and value the silences therein.
