Good evening All

We're considering a Playstation 3 for our new blu ray player and as we already have a PS2 and a huge amount of games, we could replace our standard (old) DVD player and games consoles for one unit!

However, someone has informed me today that the latest gen PS3 cannot play PS2 games - please can someone let me know if 1. this is true and 2. if so, is there a way around this - having it chipped or something.

I hope i don't sound too daft! Any advise will be greatly received.

Many thanks,

Jas.

Yes it's true if you buy a new one 40gb with 2 usb sockets on the front it is not compatable with ps2 games, however if you get an older version 60gb i think with 4 usb sockets on the front that is compatable.

Even the 60gb version will not play all PS2 games and are only avalible 2nd hand. My advice is get a new 40gb model and simply keep your PS2 for the occasions you wish to play your PS2 titles.

Yes, as D.J.Krime said the old UK 60GB model didn't have all the PS2 hardware installed and relied on software emulation for some stuff and it's not compatible with all PS2 games.

Interestingly, I believe the US market PS3 had all the PS2 hardware inside the PS3.

The new UK PS3 runs cooler than the old 60GB if that makes any difference.

Agree with D.J - rather than spend on any upgrades (not that you can anyway!) keep a PS2 in the cupboard.

Steve, i have a 60gb ps3, i also own 55-60 ps1 & ps2 games, out of them all only one will not work(swingaway golf), i keep the ps2 handy as the wife likes to play the golf game now & then. I think there's a web site somewhere that lists all the games that the ps3 can play.

good luck with your choice, Alan

Firstly, id hold tough until E3 next week to see are there any new PS3 hardware announcements. Also there are stories coming out about a new PS3 being launched in August but this seems to be for the US. It might be worth waiting a couple weeks.

You can check for compatibility here:

I think the new system will be announced at the upcoming E3 show next week although I just expect it to be a new retail pack ie maybe 80GB as standard. PlayTV is due out in September so the 40GB HD is going to get full pretty quickly especially when games such as GTA and MGS install around 4GB each of data. For the record, I have a 60GB unit and there's no issue with heat or noise, I use it all the time and think it's a great console. I initially bought mine with the intention of playing some PS2 titles but once you've sampled HD gaming, you really don't want to go back. If there is a new console configuration on the way then Sony should announce it at their media presentation on Tuesday evening around 11.30pm. I miss the real E3 show so much :(
