My fourth JVC DVD recorder has just gone kaput. The The first three were replaced on warranty but this last one has lasted for two whole years!

I'm looking around for a replacement and have settled on one of the Sony range. I notice that the 890 gets the thumbs up. Before that it was the 990, I think. What I'm wondering is whether there is any different in performance in the current Sony range, apart from the volume of recordings that can be held.

I have the 970, the only difference I think is the size of the Hard Drive.

I discovered that it is excellent at playing CD's recorded onto its HD, in fact as good as putting them through a quality CD player!

TV up scaling is impressive to full HD although I use my Onkyo 875 which is only slightly better.
I highly recommend these units.

Thanks. Do you have any experience in viewing jpeg photos on the DVD recorder?

I burned mine onto a CD but the quality of the picture via the JVC recorder was poor. The colour was out and the picture juddered.

I can't help on the Jpegs but I can recommend Sony DVD /hardrive recorders. My 910 model has been utterly reliable ever since I purchased it 3 years ago. Fantastic picture, dead easy to use.

Haven't tried it on the 970, store my digital pics onto my PS3 direct off my Sony W1 camera which is excellent.
Would hope that they would be as good on the 970 Hard Drive.

Thanks everyone. I shall shop around for a 995 in a fortnight or so when I get back from a holiday. The jpeg would be a bonus for easy viewing although I get excellent pics on my PC.

I have a Sony 970 which works fine in most respects but if you set it for more than one recording over a period of time, it only does the first one! What am I doing wrong!

Turn EPG Link off (the broadcasters don't always broadcast reliable information) and make sure you have the latest firmware - version 1.65. This was a correction to counteract some issues that the x70 series recorders had with cancelling timer settings.

Go to http://support.sony-europe.com/hav/downloads/firmware/firmware.aspx?site=odw_en_GB&m=RDR-HXD870&f=FW_DVDR for instructions and the firmware download for 870, 970 and 1070 recorders (all the same firmware). The site includes instructions for checking the current firmware version of your recorder.
