The fact that I'm posting is testament to the fact that I'm at a complete loss. I have; Sony DAV-IS10 Surround Sound Toshiba 46WM48 DLP TV SKY HD Xbox 360 Can't get surround sound on any of the options, so I tried to simplify it and build it bit by bit. I have tried connecting the Sony via HDMI into my TV's single HDMI port and unplugged everything else. Now I would expect to be able to get surround sound from a DVD with the HDMI Sound option switched on ...... but i get nothing more than a hiss. Maybe I'm being stupid but doesn't HDMI carry sound & vision? I have asked a Sony dealer and he reckons it should work, is it my TV? Any help much appreciated

Ok, this a bit confusing - why would it be your TV? The Sony has an in-built DVD player, and the speakers all connect directly to it, so even if you hadn't connected it to the TV, when you press play on the DVD player built into the Sony, you should get sound from the speakers, even if it's not connected to anything else (including the TV). Can you confirm you've hooked all the speakers up correctly?

If you're expecting sound to come out from the TV's speakers by connecting the Sony to the TV via HDMI, then I'm afraid this won't happen. The Sony is only exporting the video via HDMI as it's expecting to handle the sound through it's own amplifier / speaker setup.

I can get sound through the tv speaker but not the surround sound speakers (from the DVD), when I run the auto calibration I can hear sound through all the speakers and I can hear a background hiss when I play a DVD but no surround sound. I will double check the speakers but I think they are plugged in correctly, they are colour coded so it is pretty difficult not to have them plugged in correctly.

Okay, have read through the manual for this now and it seems you can output the sound through the HDMI socket (not sure why you would want to do this, but there you go!). So this must be what is happening. In which case, do the following:

1. Press Function repeatedly until DVD is shown on the front panel display.
2. When the system is in stop mode (i.e. no DVD playing) press Display and the Control Menu should appear on the screen.
3. Select Setup, then Custom.
4. On the Custom Setup menu, make sure the "Audio HDMI Out" setting is set to Off.

This should then mean the sound is no longer coming from your TV and should therefore come out from the speakers. The manual says also to make sure the "Sound Field" is on. I believe this should be set to "Auto Format Direct Standard" which appears as A.F.D STD on the display.

I do appreciate the help, I have tried as you suggested and I still get no sound through the speakers. The reason I was trying to do it in this way because I thought it was the simplest way to prove whether the system works before I try and connect Sky HD. I do get a background hiss through the speakers but no actual sound. Everyone I talk to tells me I should be able to get sound via HDMI (even Sony shop) but I can't get it to work. My TV doesn't have an optical connection, it does have a connection marked "audio" I have a cable that is Optical and one end and the other end fits into the TV but I have no idea what the other connection is other than the fact I used to use it with a Mini Disc player. I have also tried connecting the AV to the TV via standard phono red/white cables but that makes no difference. As I said when I run auto calibration I get sound through the speakers so I don't understand why I get nothing when I play a DVD.

Hmm, I'm still a little unsure on exactly what you're trying to achieve as you talk about hooking the TV up via the optical cable and RCA phono leads as well. In theory, for DVD sound, all you should need is the HDMI cable going into the TV from the Sony. If you want the DVD sound to come through the TV speakers, you need to follow the steps I detailed above but set the Audio HDMI Out setting to On. If you don't want sound through the TV speakers, this should be set to Off.

It might be best to visit a Sony shop so they can walk you through exactly how the unit should be connected up and the settings you should have. That way, you can test it and make sure it's working as, if sound still isn't coming through the speakers once you have it definitely configured correctly, my guess is it must be a faulty unit.
