Sony DA6400ES, Streaming Music and Internet Radio....

Bit of a long shot as so few of these units around..... I have been studying both the manuals, it mentions installing the 'ES' software on the PC for streaming Music and Internet radio - and by this I assume that the PC is doing all the work and just passing the music data over the LAN to the receiver to playback.

So my question is.... does anyone know if you can use a NAS device to use as a source rather than a PC. No mention of it anywhere in the manual. Even the Sales Guy in the sony centre yerterday had no idea !!!

Yes you can use a NAS for this but I would suggest you look at a Sonos/Squeezebox device for this application. The GUI on the Sony is fine but it is frustrating to use if you have a large amount of files. It is much the same with all av amps offering streaming facilities, nice in theory but not perfect in application.

Thanks HCC, so I would not need to install the 'ES' software at all then ???? (still shuddered when thinking about using sony software after the horrors of sonicstage with my walkman)

The sonos is a great system but I wont want too many boxes....the thought of the amp doing it all just appeals. I have a large collection of music, over 500 albums but its well organised in folders by Artist -> album -> tracks is the 6400Es really that unusable ?

Totally agree with you on the Sonicstage - I made the same frustrating mistake. The 6400 is a great amp but the streaming interface just isnt that good compared to a stand alone unit. As I mentioned Sony is not alone in this.

You could always try it first and then add on a squeezebox / Sonos. The beauty of streaming music is convenience and to that end I feel the process should be painless. So far I am yet to see any AV amplifier handle the task well enough for me to recommend it as a solution.

Perhaps I should just stick with my home built vista Media centre and stream the output via the digital coax into a 2400ES and save myself some cash !
