I recently bought a BDP S470 to watch Blu-Rays as well as the iPlayer/YouTube addons, but although the picture looks great on all these, no sound at all is coming through my TV (for blu-ray discs or the other features). I'm still waiting to hear back from Sony on why this might be, but really hope one of you can help.

My TV is an LD 42PX5D, and I am connecting through just the HDMI cable. I have tried 2 different HDMI cables, but neither worked. I also use the TV's HDMI input socket for my Sky HD box, which works (sound and audio) no problem all the time with the same cables etc.

I am hoping the problem is with the audio settings of the Blu-Ray Player, but have tried countless combinations and cannot find any that work. My TV's specs are as listed here: http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/televisions/0,39030217,39195118,00.htm

And the Blu-Ray Player's are as listed here: http://reviews.cnet.com/blu-ray-players-recorders/sony-bdp-s470/4507-9991_7-33974889.html?tag=mncolBtm;rnav

I have downloaded all the latest firmware updates etc... what is going on?!

Thanks!

Thanks. I've tried this but it doesn't seem to have had an effect. As I understand it this is a screen setting rather than audio, so would it affect the sound?

Another strange thing - when I use the "Easy Install" option half of the screen disappears as the left hand side of the image is stretched across the whole screen - I think it might be trying to use 1080p rather than i (for which my TV is set up) so perhaps it is just detecting all the settings incorrectly?

Are you sure your TV has not been set to 'mute' accidently? Just a thought......

Mute? Oh yeah...

Have tried PCM. Here is a run-down of the options I'm given:

Audio (HDMI) - Auto / PCM

DSD Output Mode - On / Off

BD Audio MIX Setting - On / Off

Dolby Digital (Coaxial/Optical) - Downmix PCM / Dolby Digital

DTS (Coaxial/Optical) - Downmix PCM / Dolby Digital

DTS Neo:6 - Cinema / Music / Off

Audio DRC - Auto / Standard / Wide Range

Downmix - Surround Stereo

Have tried most combinations but nothing doing... I suppose I could connect with Composite cable but I understand this reduces quality, which was kind the point in my upgrading to Blu-Ray in the first place...

Could my TV somehow not be compatibile, or is the Blu-Ray Player itself just faulty? Would be very helpful to know which of these options could be affecting...?

Thanks again

The obvious one to try would be down mix surround stereo if you havent already. That is the one that I would assume the TV would understand

Sorry the option is to select either "Surround" or "Stereo" for the Downmix.

Basically I'm trying to figure out whether it could be that my TV and BD Player aren't compatible, or if my BD Player is faulty? I'm pretty sure I've exhausted all the audio options, though as I'm obviously far from expert I could well be making a crucial error somewhere with these. At the moment I have Audio set to PCM, have ignored the Coaxial/Optical options as I'm not using that connection (is this right?!) and have the other options set to "off". Downmix I have tried on both Surround and Stereo but still get nothing either way.

So frustrating! Any suggestions at all, very welcome please...

How are you connecrting to the TV?

If it is an HDMI cable, which one are you using?

Have you tried connecting with stereo RCAs?

Yes I am connecting with HDMI cable. It is this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0019RKS32/ref=oss_product

I see now that 1080i is not mentioned - could this be the problem? - though it does claim to fully support all HDTV and HDMI Devies - is this spurious?

If this is the problem would it be a case of having to get a different cable?

As for the speaker suggestion I think the TV settings are correct - I will check - but as Sky comes through the TV speakers via HDMI socket I don't think this can be it.

I wasn't keen to use RCAs because I thought this would drop the quality? Maybe I'm wrong there - or would it be noticeable?

Thanks,

Oh I also tried the HDMI cable that came with my Sky HD box... would that also be wrong for 1080i?

I would think using RCA to a telly would be better quality, unless you require your telly to do some pseudo-surround sound. I don't think LCD's are that good with sound though.

For stereo, RCA would be better cos your digital to analgoue conversion will be done in your player which is guaranteed to be better than your TV.

1080i is a lower resolution than 1080p and Sky's maximum resolution is only 1080i anyway so they aren't going to put a cable in that can't support that resolution.

Red herring I'm afraid.
