eventually i will get a NAS and get a set up around the house. so which one do i choose, gonna be using tv surround set up in one room and will sort things for other rooms in time. apart from obvious costs is there much difference in quality over the two choices or any disadvantages with one. will just use it off my computer for now. any advice from owners would be great

squeezebox user.

it works. the Dacs in the touch are better than they should be. the Dacmagic is not used now. syncs well with the others, or can be seperate.

can be wired or wireless. a nice app for the iPhone/iTouch

Squeezebox here too.

Sounds great. Relatively cheap. Works flawlessly.

And just makes more sense to have the display on the unit where everyone can see it rather than on the remote. (Unless i didn't do my Sonos research properly, but never saw a display on the unit itself).

No there isn't but to my mind it makes more sense to have the display on the remote, where it's easily to hand, rather than having it sitting on an equipment rack ten feet away where I can't read it.

As to the original question, I'd say it depends on how many rooms you're going to go with eventually, more than two I'd say Sonos, two or less I'd probably save the money and go with Squeezebox, NAS server requirements not withstanding.

+1 on that - from my experience, when I started with one Zone, the Sonos was expensive for what I got, with four zones, it's a real pleasure to use.

not a problem there is a Squeezebox remote with that option.

Or you can use an iPhone/iTouch/iPad if you have one.

As with Sonos.

its worth bearing in mind some NAS' do not allow you to install the squeezebox software on them. Ones that do can be rather costly. I suggest you look into this a little more before deciding as further down the line you might not want to spend that much money on a NAS.

Sonos user

Can't speak highly enough of it. Works seamlessly with my cheap NAS, options for Spotify or Napster, great remote. I've ripped everything in FLAC and I've ditched the CD player. Even my wife rates it! Praise indeed for any bit of gadgetry.

I listen to so much more music now than before.

That's one advantage of Sonos, you don't need to think about that part, Sonos works with any NAS (pretty much).

I have a squeebox duet which I am very happy with, I now use an android app instead of the supplied remote control which works very well. I have to say though, the sound does drop out sometimes and every now and then I have to reboot sqeezcentre.

A comparison is a little unfair though, as there is a large difference in cost.

I use a SB (well a SB+) but haven't tried Sonos. If you're going to want to use Spotify then I'd go for Sonos so you don't need to worry about which NAS/PC will run your server s/w. If you have a SB your other component choices are limited if you want to stream Spotify.

While I like the squeezebox in general, the lack of UPnP/DLNA support is a major one to me...

Sonos User. I think it's great.

I have problems with wifi drop weak spots in certain parts of the house. I decided not to go with Squeezebox because of this. everything has to go through the broadband router. with the Sonos it uses it's own wifi network where all devices relay through each other. This has meant that there are have been no dropouts. I have 3 zones which work flawlessly. Even using the S5 down in the garage. I was quite suprised just how good the S5 sounds. Really worth the money. Even my wife uses it, and likes it.

Ther build quality is very good and does have the 'feel' of a well made premium product.

It has been great this weekend using the party mode and having all the zones playing in sync as we have been putting the Christmas decs up.

Whenever we have a party people love it. At first it takes them a while to notice that the lounge, kitchen and dining room are all playing the same thing

interesting points of view. like i said i will have one set up with my surround sound in tv room, 2 units in bedrooms while in time i would like something like the unityqute in the living room. it seems like the general concensus is that the sonus works better and sounds better so maybe the extra cost is justified

Perhaps you should have mentioned the other rooms in a little more detail at the start, do you have any audio equipment in the other rooms at all?

I don't think Squeezebox has any equivalent to the SonOs ZP120, ie something you just connect speakers to. They have an S5 equivalent (no speakers required) in the Boom, but I don't know if it gets quite the same plaudits as the S5 as far as the sound quality goes.

My decision to go with Squeezebox was in part due to the fact I already had a NAS capable of running SB server and now I've had my Touch for a while I'm extremely happy with it.

Before you look at specific makes I think a good starting point would be to sit down and work out what you want to achieve in your house then see which kit matches your criteria then what fits your budget.
