The motor on my Debut III/ SB is making a heck of a noise!
It's definitely the motor, even without the belt on the pulley it's noisy.
Interestly, the 60 Hz pulley made the the platter turn too quickly so I reverted to the UK one.
Might be time to give it the heave-ho....

My 78 player still going strong after 80years use..only old fashioned music on 78s..but you can vary the speed? So victor Sylvester and his roof top orchestra slowed right down can sound a bit like death metal? Or speeded up? Rave music?

As far as the grumbling motor, I wondered if the speed box has something to do with it. Going to try connecting to a 240 step-up transformer (after checking the new power supply is dual voltage of course) and see what that does.
A new motor is only $50 and easy enough to mount, so that might be the last ditch option.
As for the speed, I'm baffled. It played like Alvin and the Chipmunks with the 60 Hz pulley.

Wonder if AC is somehow getting through to the motor, not entirely of course, but if it's not completely rectified and smooth, that would give rise to the grumbing noise you describe. A multimeter will tell you.

Anyway, I'm going to call the Needle Doctor tomorrow (mail order supplier of all Pro-Ject parts in the US) and see what they have to say.

You can bypass the Speedbox if you think it's at fault.

Also check they've sent you the correct PSU - AC not DC.

I've seen some grumbly / noisy motors that can be carefully stripped and lubed.... (ooer).

They are quite simple beasts with a sleeve bearing at each end.

Did you check out the motor with a multimeter to see if both windings were of similar resistance ?

PSU is definitely AC. Dry bearings may be the culprit as suggested, as the unit was stored for six years. A new motor is only US$50, so worth a try...
