small speakers that are GF friendly

I have just moved into my GF house, and the lounge is not huge. The system shown in my sig, is going to be going in the large bedroom, so I need new speakers for the lounge.

I have creek evo amp MK1 and Arcam cd192. My epos M5 will have to be sold, as they are to big and the wrong colour! Don't get me started on that....

I listen to alot of chilled beats, women singers etc. I was looking at the Leema, PMC db1i, and was wondering if there were anyother I should be looking at? I got upto about £900.

They will need to be close to the rear wall, prob no more than 10 - 15cm, so do not want base boom. Also, I would like a rounded speaker, that sounds smooth and not harsh in the trebble.

I don't mind looking at second hand either....

Cheers

How about the Usher BE-718 Tiny Dancer?!

Definately put Dynaudio Focus 110 on your list. Unbeatable tight bass at the price. Extremely entertaining speaker. Dynaudio Excite X12 same size and almost as good for less money....

I like the look of the Proac's. Do they work close upto a wall, or do they sound bass boomy?

Also, what do the dynaudio sound like etc?

Epos M5 are already small at 174 x 325 x 210mm.

At 155 x 290mm x 234mm, the PMC DB1i will only be very slightly smaller.

How 'small' are you talking about?

The brand new Dali Mentor Menuet speakers - reviewed in our current, December issue - measure a dinky 25x15x23cm. and are unfussy about positioning. They come in glossy black or white finishes.

Slightly cheaper are the superb Leema Xero speakers - review here - at a tiny 22x22x21cm. Five choices of finish there.

ProAc Tablette Reference 8 Signatures. Tiny but lovely.

Available in a range of colours and wood types

Very lovely, but might be a bit boomy so close to the wall; mine are sitting about 23cm out and i sometimes wonder if they should be more. But then maybe i got used to less bass in my last place and hearing them properly is throwing me!

How about something front ported or sealed?

There are a few factors that are going to come into play here, so a little more info is needed. What sort of volume you like to listen at? For your type of music (some of what I listen to is similar) you need a half decent bass response, but many speakers that do will be too overpowering at higher volumes in a smaller room.

I have moved from a detatched house, into a teraced house, so not loud at all anymore...

The Loma's and Proac seem the right size, and would pass her approval. I am going to need them close to the wall, as the room dictates it.

ha-ha I am sure that she is worth the new speakers, if not, she could be sold easily on e-bay!

The epos are a bit to big and the wrong colour. I am sure if I said that about her 55 pairs of shoes, I would get a nice answer;-)

Are the Lema a neutral presentation? Are they a bit bass light etc.

Thanks for your help

If you want speakers even smaller than Epos M5's then you are not in a position to be too fussy about deep bass. All speakers of this size and type are going to be (relatively) bass light.

Save up a bit longer and get a pair of these.

They have fabulous finish and are hand built (they even wind their own inductors and build their own drivers). They are a sealed cabinet so can be used on shelves or against a wall. They are also optimised for performance at low - medium volumes. If you don't get along with them then I am always here to take them off your hands.

...... I got upto about £900.

Surely it would cost a lot less for some tins of paint to change the room colour to match your speakers.... 😉

I`ve got to mention Linn Kans, good close to a wall, fantastic imaging and even in three colours I think. There are usually a few on ebay.

How close to the wall? My ProAcs are on wall brackets in the kitchen, so about 30cm from the wall, if not a bit less. Not ideal but deffo not boomy.

I cant comment on how theyll work with your amp. Maybe someone else can, but have you considered the smaller ATCs? They are sealed cabinets and work fine close to the wall.

Tech specs go on some of the bigger First Test reviews, but otherwise we simply don't have the space. They appear the next issue in the Buyer's Guide, though, and here online when the review gets posted.

Fair point Clare, I guess I'm just a bit impatient ;-)

If you can find 'em, the Quadral Pico is a wonderful diminutive speaker, and if you want to splash the cash, Audiosmile's Kensai at £1500 takes some beating by all accounts.
