Am looking for a smallish Hifi table to house the following components NAD c545Bee CD player , Meridian 101 pre amp & 105 *4 monoblocs power amps (fairly small in actual size) and am really struggling to find some thing that is suitable/small (I dont want the unit to dominate the room) as it`s only a smallish 12 * 15 ish listening/dining room, the nearest thing I`ve come across that would be suitable is an IKEA smallish coffee table ...LACK i think it`s called...(please dont laugh!!!) and measuring my cd player and amps they would sit on the table nicely

Ive even thought of fitting a solid shelf to the wall (but the thought of wires trailing down the wall is not what my wife subscribes to)

I know that it`s not the ideal thing to sit ones Hifi on , but with a bit of modifying ie... removal ot the lower shelf , cut the legs down and refit & fill the legs with sand and maybe placing a peice of granite on the surface etc , i think it may prove suitable

I`ve been trawling the net for ages and cant find a small HIFI table that would NOT dominate the room.

Any suggestions anyone .... thanks in advance.

If you can find one (fleabay maybe) Target made a two shelf rack maybe sixty cms tall. Not pretty but it'll do the job well.

jotaboy youve already found the best vfm stand on the market

theres many an LP12 sitting on a lack table genuinely good hifi stand

That only works for the early Lack, the more recent ones are made of what might as well be cardboard and as such are only good for firelighters.

youve been down this road before andrew please provide references as many people still recommend lack

one off:youve been down this road before andrew please provide references as many people still recommend lack

References to Ikea Lack tables being used as hifi supports are almost all going to be on other hifi fora, so that challenge is a bit provocative given that posting references/links to other forums will be deleted.

Here are the materials IKEA list for it's construction...

"Top: Particleboard, Fibreboard, ABS plastic, Printed and embossed acrylic paint, Clear acrylic lacquer Filling material: Paper Leg: Particleboard, Fibreboard, Foil"

I think the objection to more recent Lack tables is the hollow legs that are filled with paper and the poor standard of finish now. People would buy a few Lack tables and saw down the legs and insert spikes to make custom modular/stacked rack units. Of course now the legs are hollow it is no longer easy to spike the legs.

The little IKEA Corras bedside/shelf cabinet was excellent as a small hifi 'rack' (v popular with the Naim guys who found their stuff fitted in nicely).

The newer EINA replacement looks awful. No wood/wood veneer at all. Just varnished MDF.

not intended to be remotely provocative chebby but that accusation came up before and remains unproven.

bought my lack table in 1998 and yes its as light as a feather but yes also it works

clare was happy to test the ikea stuff so cant see what the problem is

also the lack and corras stuff isnt mdf its lightweight chipboard at best described by them as wood fibre dont think it was ever wood

one off:youve been down this road before andrew please provide references as many people still recommend lackThat was me not Andrew, and as i've stated before the Lack tables used to be made of solid MDF and leant themselves to being modified which was popular with "audiophiles" but as Chebby suggests the "evidence" is on other Fora and you know full well i/we cant link to. There is a thread on another forum dedicated to modifying the Lack tables/Tv stands that has all the "evidence" you need.

The Lack table's are now made from a particle or foil board with cardboard sandwhiched between and are hollow, and cant be modified as if you cut into it,it loses all it's rigidity. And as the OP mentioned modifying one i dont think recommending the Lack units is helpful.

If you want proof what materials the Lack range is now made from, go on Ikea's website, it clearly states what materials are used.

apologies to andrew sorry to have confused you

no i dont want proof about what its made of as my previous post indicates i already know

id want proof that the sonic character hasnt been as good for the last ten years because thats not the impression given elsewhere in fact if you look the claims are that its the lightweight construction that has made it so good

if you think that recommending a highly regarded hifi unit is unhelpful then frankly i think you go it wrong also youll see people have modified lack correas and eina stands and tables

also dont accuse me of something i havent said fair enough you cant link to other forums but have you tried google

works for me

Dont think i accused of anything did i?

Have you tried google? You would find the thread on the other forum dedicated to modyfying the lack units/tables etc and also the fact they're no good for modyifying now.

Dont think i mentioned effects on sonic character either, merely that the current Lack range is no good for modifying, which is what the OP mentioned he was considering.

That's the last i'll say on the matter......This discussion is no longer helpful to the OP.

crocodile tears given what youve accused me of me old mate

also im missing a really good doco on my favorite city berlin

i get upset when i see things like
