i have not switched to sky hd yet but in all honesty i think the extra tenner on top of your already high enough subscriptions is a rip off that now doesn't seem valid to charge. I mean hd freeview is here and i know sky willl argue it costs more but thats tosh, i mean all of their equipment will be standard state of the art anyways. HD is nearly the norm and no extra charge should be made. they've had it good for now but the scam has to stop !!

So, you can stay with BBC HD, and a bit of ITV and a bit of C4 for "free" or pay your tenner and have 42 plus channels inHD..............seems a no brainer to me if you are wanting to go the HD route.

What does a Freeview/Freesat box cost, how many £10/per month will that be and just for what I've mentioned above, and if you need a dish for FreeSat, more money, in the meantime you can have what Sky offers now?

The argument re equipment is not relevant to what is being offered, as clearly all other mainstream broadcasters have the same opportunity, but seemingly choose not to

Not really sure I understand your point thoroughly

well all tv's bought these days are hd, can i buy one that isn't ?? and with 3d on the way, that will be their next box. just cos they choose to show 42 channels in hd should not mean they charge u for it, i mean 24fps is what its filmed in. yes charge a year ago but when hd is the normal tv bought now then i think their tenner is a tenner to much. my opinion.

If you'd done even a little bit of research into broadcasting in HD you'd know why it's expensive....

ok may be expensive but when u buy a dab radio u dont pay to listen to the airwaves it receives, when u buy a laptop you dont pay extra to watch iplayer or youtube, when i have a hd tv and can get a hd box i should not have to pay an extra tenner to pick up hd ?? especially when im paying near on £600 a year as it is ?? its the hardware you pay for to receive it and i just think hd is here and the cost should now be dropped.

so if i get hd over £700 a year is good value ??? especially when freeview is erm FREE. im surprised at how you guys are happy to pay a tenner a month to a giant corporation, i think its kinda a 'ive got hd thing' and sky have you guys where they want you. i bet you shop at tesco's too ? think outside the box for a moment

if they could charge more , and make more money , they would , if they thought by charging a little less , they would get more subscribers and make more money , they would do that , whatever makes sky more money is what sky will do ..

its a business , just like any other ..sad but true ..

You either pay for it with your license fee (in the case of BBC services) or by being forced to sit through endless adverts in the case of commercial stations and it's no different with websites, why do think websites are plastered with adverts-it aint to make 'em look pretty....

You're not just paying for the hardware, you're paying a premium for the content. HD has a higher/additional premium because it cost far more, right from production to broadcasting it, pure and simple.

As a result the HD charge wont be disappearing anytime soon.

I disagree. I think it's not bad value for money at the moment. At the start, it probably wasn't but now there is plenty to watch in HD. The argument that Freeview HD is here, so Sky should stop charging is absolute nonsense. When Freesat was launched, I bought the box. The SD performance was soft and pretty woeful and once that summer's sports had finished there was nothing to watch in HD. Content on BBC HD, 4HD and ITVHD is still pretty thin on the ground and I'm afraid I quickly realised, that you do indeed get what you pay for. If you don't want all the additional HD, simply don't pay Sky the £10 and stick with Freeview/Freesat HD. Trust me, you will get very bored very quickly but heh, it won't cost you anything. Meanwhile, please leave us that are happy paying for content in peace. I'm sure once there are enough subscribers and HD is the 'norm' (long way off), Sky might consider dropping the £10 premium but at the minute I'm happy for them to invest in new equipment and more channels.

Sky are doing the HD box for £50. Where is there a Freeview or Freesat HD PVR for that.

The 10 ppm must surely subsidise the cost of the box as well.

Love HD. Footbal (inc MOTD) just not the same in SD.

That was a completely different kettle of fish!

Even Sky realised it was a rip-off to charge a premium for allowing access to the HDD,and why it was dropped for subscribers.

It cost Sky nothing to allow access to the HDD, it costs a fortune to provide HD services.

I dont see the HD charge being dropped anytime soon...Though i could see it being swallowed up with an Anytime+/VOD/3D charge

Hi,

It's only £10 extra for 50 HD channels if you're already subscribing to the full package. I have only one entertainment package so my £10 only gets me app. 17 channels of HD.

If I paid SKY £16 for the movie pack, I get an further 12 HD channels within the £10 additional charge and if I pay a further £9.50 to add the Sports pack on I then get full access to all the HD channels.

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.

I don't agree it's a 'rip off' - it's a free market and if you don't want it then don't have it.

For me, paying for TV full stop (OK licence fee unavoidable) is crazy. A basic Sky package is going to cost me what? £200, £300 per year or more? For what? just loads more drivel.

I'm quite happy to spend money with online DVD / BD rental and get a few FULL HD quality films per month as opposed to watching lots of US rubbish... whether in HD or not.

I think paying for picture quality is really stupid. Just as stupid as when sky charged for sky plus. or charging for multi room.

however i do pay the hd subscription to sky. i do it because the box was free so i think of it as if im paying 120 for an excellent pvr. one of the best interfaces and design. that is dirt cheap. i dont agree with the 'you get 40 channels in hd' argument because how many of us are full subscribers and pay £40 for movies and sport. For £28 a month i get broadband, tv and a 250gb pvr.

sky are not the best company and they do monopolise sport and movies and american shows. it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth but there aren't many choices.

hopefully they will drop the fee since virgin dont charge on their reasonable m package and hd freeview is launching. ofcom and channel four could help matters by the latter not being so dogmatic (channel5) and former not tying itself down with licence deals (film4 e4)

the bbc should use its channel to up scale sd to hd
